Saints signed QB Nathan Peterman (1 Viewer)

Peterman was also a Vikings back-up behind Kirk Cousins in 2021, the season Kubiak was Minnesota’s OC and Janocko was QB coach… this is all and only about the fact Janocko and Kubiak know him and like his knowledge of that system. He also had a great Wonderlic score. This is about Petwrman’s solid knowledge and not the fact that come gametime, he’s a horrible player. It’s not unusual a bad player becomes a great coach … worked for CSP
Shouldn't surprise anyone that it was Kubiak's call to bring him in.

Peterman was with the Raiders in 2021, he never played for the Vikings. He was with Janocko in Chicago.

Several thoughts:

1. Who is this guy’s agent? He is in the running for GOAT agent, along with whoever represents Mitch Tribusky.

2. He looks kinda like DA. Maybe Peterman is his illegitimate love child.

3. Possible that Kubiak came across as difficult or cocky early on after getting hired, so they’re sending the new young OC a message. “Here’s a QB you can win with.”

4. The script is for us to get the first pick in the draft after Carr retires from boo induced depression.

5. Peterman is a sacrificial fluffer for Haener. Like those poor dogs Vick used to kidnap and use for practice against the real fighting dogs.

6. No one wants to play for DA. This is literally the best player they could find that was enthusiastic about joining the team.

See? He looks a lot like him

Peterman must be a hell of a film study guy or something. Terrible signing

A few thoughts:

1. Saints like Haener. He’ll be given every chance to compete to be the backup.

2. The signing of Peterman is both insurance and an indicator of the team’s thinking relative to the draft (see #3). Of course, Peterson doesn’t move the needle. But he’s a guaranteed third arm in a dwindling backup QB market. And given that the team is in a soft rebuild with limited resources, he doesn’t cost much of anything.

Jimmy G would likely command $8-12 million as a backup. The moment you sign him he’s your backup and it becomes difficult to move off the commitment to him should the team get their guy in the draft or Haener shows and proves.

3. Peterman’s signing keeps alive the possibility that the team might draft a QB assuming the right guy is available or in striking distance for a potential trade up. Let’s say, for example, the team eyed McCarthy (not saying, just saying) and took him. You can easily move away from Peterson. At the same time his familiarity with AJ allows him the chance to play mini-QB coach in QB room all spring and summer, which would be critical for a potential rookie QB and Haener and to some degree Carr as well.

Thing is, the team cannot be premature but has to be anticipatory. We all remember the signing of Adrian Peterson followed by the drafting of Alvin Kamara. AK eventually made AP expendable. We hadn’t made the biggest investment in Adrian but it was enough that you almost wish you had known Alvin would be there for the taking.

Now I know the team likes to fill holes in FA to allow them to draft the BPA. But loading up at the edge or corner is far different from doing so at QB. You sign Jimmy and suddenly a guy you like is there in the draft and now you are almost compelled to pass him or ship away your 4th round investment from the previous year who you also traded up to land. So, here you sign a guy who is cheap and can provide a camp arm, wait to see what happens in the draft, and then act accordingly after the draft.

4. That brings me to the fourth and final point. Let’s assume the draft comes and the team didn’t select a QB. Well, now they could still add another vet QB to compete for the backup role and at that point any financial investment doesn’t impact you in the same way it would if you added the same guy pre-draft and then had your QB of choice fall into your lap on draft day.

As I said earlier, tea leaves…

I'm kind of getting the blahs about our FA class.
William Gay - good signing I believe
Peterman - no
Cedric Wilson - I really don't know
So, I’ve explained Peterson. Now a word on the others. The Saints are in a soft rebuild or reset. They want to get younger and faster and they want to get cap in order. Drafting a QB could actually help that. But if you pay attention to the free agents they are bringing in most of them are younger and are guys who could possibly be a part of the Saints of today and tomorrow. Even Chase Young gives them a bonafide talent at the edge who is only 24.

The other thing is Gay and Wilson are valuable signings who are coming here largely to play backup roles. There’s been so much focus on DL/OL but our receiving corps is depleted. So we need to add players there. In Wilson you have someone who has been relatively productive in the league who would likely be your #4 - 6 receiver. It’s hard to slam that signing when taken in that context. And he’s a value add because he has familiarity with the system and he is also an adept run-blocking

Gay is a really sold signing. Player who has shown flashes and one who has upside.

Lastly we are missing middle round picks. Do we sit back and do nothing to fill critical backup roles? No you add guys you have a vision for and who can help your team

Oh trust me...I understand the need for depth and getting younger.
Just hoping that signing Peterman doesn't deter them from drafting another QB.

Signing Peterman says the Saints aren’t serious about building the best team they possibly can. Immediately Saints have worst backup QB in the league. With the propensity for Carr to hold onto the ball, you know he will be injured for multiple games. Will not win any of them if Peterman is the QB.
