Saints signed QB Nathan Peterman (1 Viewer)

A locker room doesn’t need to figure out the Pythagorean theorem.
Intelligence is needed to help break down film and scheme in the QB room though. That seems to be the reason why Peterman keeps getting signed by teams across a 8 year career. Haener was drafted in 2023 with the intent to develop him into QB2 in 2024 and that day is here now.

Very possible that Carr, Haener and Hill are our QB depth chart when the season comes. They’re all we need to carry.

Not disagreeing with you, but it's inconsistent with the Saints making a push for Flacco. If we really believed in Haener as our #2, then I don't think we were bringing in Flacco to be #3.

I don’t know how serious the Flacco talks were. It’s possible that interest fell apart over salary based on how we viewed him. He’s 39 and last season seems like an anomaly compared to his recent seasons as backup. Whoever signs him will overpay for that big 2023 stretch run more than what’s needed from him as a backup QB going forward.

He's a backup QB not a starting QB and we need another arm for camp.
What I don't get is that "camp arms" are guys you sign right before, well, camp. Undrafted FAs or guys like Peterman who can run scout team or just take some reps to give the other guys a break - they get signed in July or early August.

You don't sign a camp body in the first 2 days of FA, a month before the draft.

So I guess the "player/coach" angle makes the most sense.

Either way it's high comedy.

Maybe it was to get Flacco's cell phone number to put it on speed dial in case Carr goes down? .... But seriously, I think it's Flaco's range of experiences that made him interesting to the Saints. I won't be shocked if Petermen doesn't get cut during the preseason but that we're bringing him as a camp arm with knowledge about our system to be able to call in case Carr, Haener and Hill all go down, in which case we're screwed anyway.

I have no idea if your for or against your argument.

He is the 3rd QB or lets say 2nd, either way only one QB starts and gets the majority of snaps for game day, the backup gets snaps in preparation for possibly playing on game day and the third guy runs the scout team to get everybody else on offense prepared (backup O-line and backup skill position groups) I never said anything about a camp arm, but people are upset with the signing like the guy was supposed to be the starter when he was signed for depth and to help push Haener in camp.

Playbook installations at OTAs and minicamp begin soon. It’s good to have an arm who’s versed with the system and can share expertise to the younger QB who’ll be the actual QB2

Right now it looks like the Saints feel comfortable with Haener and Hill as playable backup options at their salary rates. We don’t really need to crowd QB with multiple expensive salaries to have big names at backup QB on paper. Especially when they may have the same backup potential as our draft pick last year.

I don’t think we had plans of throwing out 4M+ guaranteed money just for a backup QB on the big names while we have a young QB on a mid round rookie salary. Peterman’s closer to vet minimum. This is reasonable cap responsibility. We could put that 4M towards a significant contributor at DL or OL who will see the field a lot.
No, but good Lord. We could have done better than that even at league minimum. Peterman is truly awful. It's like we didn't even want someone to even come close to competing with Haener, let alone Carr. Peterman is horrid. It's competition in name only. Not actual competition. That's what disgusts me about the move.
