Saints trade Adam Trautman to Broncos for #195th pick (WR A.T. Perry, Wake Forest) (1 Viewer)

Trautman was an effective and balanced starting TE that was coming into his own as a TE. To compound matters, the position was already a spot of need anyway, trading it away for a gamble hardly seems prudent.
Perry isn't as much of a gamble as a lot of the smurfs taken before him. He's even flexible enough to play in the slot.

I think he’s great value for where he was picked, to be sure. It just seems like a stretch to trade away a starter at a position of need for it is all.

He wasn't good or coming his own. His production drop and his snap count reduced from 58% to 49%.

It's why Johnson jumped from 20% to 60% from 2021 to 2022. Had a mini break out year for himself.

It's probably why they brought in FA TE to replace him.

After watching the video interview on this kid, I am amazed he lasted until the 6th round - that was one insightful video! He's going to be a great one. Thanks for posting the video Jesse Custer. If you have any doubts on this pick, that'll solve it.

Right!

Here is spotracs list of available unrestricted free agent TE's

If signed, I don't think that we see Foster Moreau this coming season, however there are some servicable TE's available otherwise.
Man I would love for Foster to be able to suit up this year and I’d to think we would be his top choice as well. I have a good friend that just went through treatment for the same thing as him and God it looked brutal. Hopefully he will be able to power through it. 🙏🏼

He was brought up a lot in my Day Two WR prospect thread, but i called him a Day 3 guy. Which is accurate. Wish I talked him up more...

I really like the pick. He could have been 3rd RD pick and most would not have been shocked. He has produced in the past against good competition and his weaknesses can be cleaned up, here is his blurb:

Saints selected Wake Forest WR A.T. Perry with the No. 195 pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.

Perry (6’3/198) was a part-time player at most for two seasons as a Demon Deacon before breaking out in his third campaign. In 2021, he posted a 71-1,293-15 receiving and led Wake Forest in all receiving categories. Wake Forest’s offense took a step back in 2022 and Perry’s numbers followed suit, though he still topped the century mark in receiving yards, scored 11 times, and caught 81 balls. Perry has a unique combination of size and speed (4.47 40). However, it could help for him to bulk up a bit and play with more physicality at the next level as he didn’t do well against physical corners in college. There’s room for Perry, 23, to grow in a number of ways, but he has the size and college production of a starting-caliber receiver in the NFL. He could be a starting wideout in three-receivers sets with the Saints this season. Perry will be worth monitoring in fantasy.

Trautman was not our starting TE last year. Juwan overtook him significantly in production and snaps. If you mean our original starting TE from 2-3 years ago. But the past doesn’t mean much when he hasn’t lived up to being a long term starter, hence the trade, and an undrafted WR took the starting TE job from him as a better receiver. We’ll be able to find a veteran FA TE to fill Trautman’s role.
