Saints using a 3 safety defense?? (1 Viewer)

Its a cool idea, but I seriously doubt it. I think theyre just throwing around scenarios, as usual.

Yeah, pretty sure that's all this is.

I'm still waiting for someone to throw out the new "2 quarterbacks lined up in the shotgun" formation ala the Jets.

I think this conversation started talking about Mike Jenkins and somehow ended up talking about Malcolm Jenkins... I honestly can't tell which Jenkins' half these complements are directed towards. But at least they're all complements, which tells me Mike Jenkins could bring some things to the table if the Saints somehow pulled off a trade for him.

we are extremely deep at safety so i do like that, safeties are usually the best all around football players on a team

The Panthers made a big mistake by not trading for Tim Tebow this past offseason. There would be no starting quarterback controversy (Cam is clearly the better passer) ...but both would've been threats to throw it deep or run it in. Double option / Double shotgun would've been impossible to plan for. Cam could've taken the snap, Tebow could've thrown a block as fullback. Or, Tebow could've taken the snap, Cam could've lined up out wide in the backfield, Tebow throws to Cam... Cam throws it deep... BOOM. Endless possibilities, impossible to plan for.

Just my opinion ... Jenkins will never be a star if he stays at safety. It's not a position you can "learn to play." Either you have the instincts, or you don't. Jenkins is a better athlete than Tommy Myers, Gene Atkins, Sammy Knight, and Darren Sharper ... but he still doesn't play the position as well as these guys did. Move him back to corner, Spagnuolo.

We should just put 11 safeties on the field. No one would ever pass against us.

But in all seriousness, I can't wait to see our RBs run down opposing defenses throats when they have to play max protect or some similar formation against us.

It's all about getting your best 11 guys out on the field for the given situation. If that means your NB is really a Safety sometimes, or your Nickel LB is a Safety coming down, then so be it.

Jenkins, being a CB his rookie year (playing a lot of NB) helps give us that versatility.

don't say 33 different ways to play 11 different guys

Mike Jenkins doesn't want to play in a 'I'm not the starter & don't feel like battling it out to get my starting job back' situation, which came up on a different thread. He wouldn't come in to any franchise right now unless he's a starter. I'll pass.

After seeing some Mini-Camp action, I'm pretty thrilled to see what Johnny Patrick is going to do to be honest. They were using him in blitz schemes to put Harper/Jenkins/Greer/P-Rob back in coverage. That just makes me drool a little. Even if Roman blitzes, I feel pretty solid about Patrick in pass coverage, and if you doubt me, go look up his stats on PFT from last year.

I'm curious to hear more about Jerico Nelson. EVERYBODY seems to be really high on this guy. He's only 5'9" and 203lbs. I'm going to guess that his first year or two he'll be a special teams ace, similar to Isa Abdul-Quddus.

Quite a few college teams run a Nickel 3-3-5 as a base defense. I don't think it would be successful with the Saints because they aren't good at stopping the run with 4 LBs and I'd doubt they would be better with 3.

I do like the idea of signing Leonard though.

I've been thinking about this and I like the idea for special packages. 3 safeties for cover on deep ball?

Regardless of alignments, a few things must happen on this defense this year. The first thing is for Malcolm Jenkins to step it up this year. Interception totals can be overrated, but in his case, it's gotta go up this year. Gotta see more big plays out of him. Next is for the defensive line to get to the quarterback. Been mentioned a million times on here. Next is for the linebackers to be able to cover tight ends and such over the middle and be quick enough to pursue the edge.

I agree and I expect Jenkins to step up HUGE this year. Spagnuolo is easily a top 3 defensive coordinator in the NFL. His defensive schemes are excellent! Ken Flajole is a great secondary coach. Another point I would like to make is that no one will have film of us running our new scheme. Our first game of 2012 is in the Superdome against a rookie QB. Echoes of 2009, when we played a rookie Matt Stafford in the Superdome on opening day. It's on like Donkey Kong!

I like Spags too but come on. A top 3 defensive coordinator? That may be taking it a little too far, and I don't expect him to fix everything so quickly as most people see to be thinking. But I'm not here to rain on your positive thoughts, so don't get the wrong idea that I'm spoiling a good mood.

The biggest thing I think will be focused on is stopping the pass. While GW was all about blitz, blitz, blitz and the element of no quarterback in the history of the NFL has ever completed a pass lying flat on his back at the same time, you have to confuse and get in the quarterback's head, and if you live by the blitz, you die by the blitz. We already witnessed that.

The NFL is like a video game right now. The passing game is so easy, gone are the days when a 250-300 yard game was a positive note, now that is what to expect every single game. With all these pass, pass, pass, pass boring offenses, I think Spags and other defensive coordinators are going to focus on trying to confuse the quarterback with schemes, and not just blitzes. Sure you still have to hit the quarterback and shake him up (though the league don't want you to touch them) but you got your safeties out there to make turnovers and big plays, and that is what wins games.

I believe this falls under SR statute 32:
(quote) "Can he play safety" or any joke contrived to add something about playing the safety position to the humor of said joke must always be followed by a reference to "Can he do backflips" so the process of groaning and moaning may commence" (unquote)

My SR bretheren, I hereby jump on this hand grenade for the good of the order.

(ahem)
But can all 11 do backflips?
