salary cap hell! (1 Viewer)

It isn't about finding the most expensive FA in the market. It's about finding the best FA to address team needs, regardless of how much they cost.

Never said otherwise. Was just making the point that the money is there if we need to pull from the future.

So you think the Saints are on a path to become a contender? Or at the current state of the team can get back to super bowl contention within the next few years? Or do they need to get more healthy with the cap to fill some holes to get there?

Drafting is imperfect and with the current financial situation we have to be perfect with the draft to get back to prosperity. You need cap space and flexibility to plug holes that you do not in the draft and we have to dig at the bottom of the barrel for over the hill or close to it free agents to plug those holes.

I think saying we have to draft perfect is hyperbole. Like most good teams, we need to hit on draft picks, plain and simple, and certainly more than what we currently do.

And yes, I do feel we are much closer to being a title contender roster wise than needing to blow it up. Sadly, I think one of the only things holding us back is we don’t have championship leadership from a coaching standpoint.

Obviously we work with what we have, but I truly believe if SP had this roster and it stayed fairly healthy, we are a 12 win team. Our roster is being viewed in downgraded fashion because it’s being washed out by poor coaching, especially on offense. Hopefully this changes with Kubiak.

People are acting like we are fielding a 4-13 expansion team like roster. No, we have the pieces and in this league, teams like ours are a lucky play/officiating call or two or homerun draft pick or two from being a 12 win contender (assuming the coaching staff is also of that caliber).

some people are acting like we are a super bowl contender that is just one piece away... Sean Payton would have went 9 and 7 and 7 and 9 just as well as any other coach... just like he already did several times before.

Can't play IFs. we have to play facts. Fact. WE ARE A 500 BALL CLUB.

We lead the league in Payroll.

Its fine... we're doing fine. Just keep doing it....

“We lead the league in payroll,” and yet people are insisting that the cap and the way we run our accounting ledger is our problem rather than pro/college scouting and coaching.

Only team without a single Pro Bowler drafted since 2018 (not counting McCoy’s sub this year), and our MONEY strategy is the problem.

I just can’t anymore. 😂

And no, I do not believe we are one piece away. I do however believe we are a good off-season and draft away, especially if a coaching epiphany occurs with DA or Kubiak turns out to be the real deal. We are certainly closer to that than we are to “blow it all up and tank” territory.

His Name(the problem) is still Loomis. You couldn't to start with. Don't need to tank. But we do need to blow it up, and retool.

Fact: Payton blew it up, went to superbowl 3 years later.

You’re exactly right…talking to ignorant brick walls, especially about items dealing with complex math, is a fruitless exercise in general.

Mirror mirror.
talking to IF this and IF that.... seedless. No growth. repeat same conversation till end of time.

Aren’t you the same guy that said the covid cap year issue ML brought up was “bull sheet,” and didn’t want to listen when people were trying to break down the math and how it is in fact, not “bull sheet?”

That should have been my first clue that I’d be wasting my time with you.

Like seriously, how is suggesting we have to do better at evaluating talent and coaching better so egregious or ignorant and wrong?

I am the one that said his comment about bringing the team to the middle of the league payroll wise was bullshirt. Ignorant....LMAO Prick? hmmmm. Completely glossed over my point. Just to spout the same crap over and over again... acting like me too stoooopeeed for mafs.

ignorant is you are still hung up on the fact that i made fun of Loomis for his gum smacking and saying he plans to bring us to the middle of the league in payroll is a bold faced lie. prick is thinking we are too stupid to understand what being 100 million in debt means. I worked in an ACCOUNTING office for 15 years. STOP IT. I am intimately familiar with the General Ledger's balancing and auditing of debits and credits.

How could you say it didn’t work when we had Sean and Drew? We were literally the league’s winningest team for like a five year stretch and if not for a couple of miracles, had likely won a ring or two.

I think people are too “SB or bust” when it comes to measuring team success. It is EXTREMELY hard to win a championship, because it requires being very good and very lucky. Sure, it is the ultimate goal, but only one team each year gets to enjoy those spoils.

Yes, we went all in to try to win a championship and we didn’t do it, however we definitely dominated the league during that stretch and that counts for something when measuring the success of a fiscal strategy.

Were we really not a success in your eyes in 2018 because an official decided not to throw a flag on the most blatant PI ever? Are we really not a success in 2017 because of the most bizarre miracle TD reception to win a playoff game? Is the ‘09 team more of a success simply because they got a lucky few fumble bounces and won an OT coin toss in a playoff game?

All of those teams were great, one just got very lucky, something many people hate to acknowledge.
You have some really strange standards. Of course every season is Super Bowl or bust. You think anybody starts the season thinking "You know, I think I'd be happy if we could get all the way to second in the division this year"? So yes, championships are the bar of success. Almost winning, regardless of the reason, doesn't count. That doesn't mean I didn't think the team was good or that I didn't enjoy watching them play. It means they didn't get it done. It was a failure.

You also conveniently forgot to quote the part of my post that specifically said "Hardly anyone was complaining about going all in while Drew was playing". I was fine with it then because we were trying to get another championship with our HOF QB. The worst thing I said about this team back then is that we should have been drafting his successor during the last few years when the writing was on the wall.

So if you're happy to keep doubling down on a cap and roster strategy that was designed to get the most out of a generational player's career, long after he's retired, then you're going to get some resistance from some of us. Especially when it didn't get results under the best circumstance of the past, much less the far worse circumstances of the present.

Guess we are now at the deflect stage of the process.

Sorry but I’m not going to say that only 1 season of the 57 or however many we have played was successful.

If that makes my standards strange, so be it. I happen to believe I just have an understanding of how hard winning a championship is and how much luck is involved with it, and to measure everything you do as a boom or bust proposition off of said luck is somewhat silly and will lead to always being angry over something you have less control over than many realize.

To me, the GOAL is to make yourself a consistent round 2 caliber playoff team; the DREAM is to win the Super Bowl.

Guess we are now at the deflect stage of the process.

Deflect what? The fact that you completely act like you are the smartest guy in this thread? That you are "teaching" us dumbies how debt works... So when I present the fact that we aren't stupid idiots you act like we are... it's deflecting.... again MIRROR MIRROR,
