That’s not something I’ve seen, but I can’t imagine leaving a tip when I did my own shopping, check out and bagging. I’d just Instacart if I wanted to tip someone, and I’d get full service for the money.
I think it depends on location and venue. A lot of small vendors using iPads or similar to log transactions will automatically show a tip field. That's always there and I just skip them and go to pay. A few supermarkets went to that, but the Safeway I frequent most doesn't. I would skip if they tried to.

I was tempted to go full Karen this morning at the store. I had a medium size order, there was one cashier who was slammed and the self check was like 6 deep, I work retail but wth

saw this today.

Just one manned register (with at least a dozen available) - with a line of full carts that went half way down the aisle

They did have a bank of self checkouts open

There is a Neighborhood Walmart by my house, and after like 6 oclock they do not have any regular registers open (they typically only have 1 during the day), only Self Check out. But Two of the self check outs are the big ones with the conveyor belt.

i remember when Self Checkout was new, that was a common problem, I think because each item was supposed to have a specific weight, but i think they have since long scrapped that model..

Our Costco finally lets the customers use the scan guns and it is awesome.

Yeah, that particular system is gone. That tech is well over 20 years old now.

The bagging area can still be important, though. There are two ways you can trip up the self-checkouts at Winn Dixie (N.O. metro area) that involve the bagging area:

1) If you place your purchases directly into your basket after scanning, and don't set the filled grocery bags down in the bagging area first. You'll (inconsistently) get prompted to place your items in the bagging area, but you'll still be able to continue checking out without assistance. Weirdly, sometimes you CAN just dump items straight into your cart without setting anything off. I have heard that the software can be set to ignore bagging-area input, and that some locations set this on or off depending on what's specifically happening at their locations.

2) If you're a little klutzy around the scanning area -- like crossing your hands, swiping items away from the bagging area (swiping right-to-left when bagging is on the right), and having multiples of the same item in one hand (viewable by the camera) while scanning another -- you can set off a "bagging area" prompt. Again, usually it doesn't hold you up -- you throw something you just scanned into a bag (or just set it down loose on the bagging scale) and it lets you continue.

I have Walmart Plus, and although i've only used it this function once, I can actually use the App to scan all my groceries when i pick them off the shelf and when i'm done, i can go to the self checkout and just scan the QR code, it charges my card and i'm done.
The reason i don't use it more often is i am am the kind of person that changes my mind too often and put stuff back. Then it becomes a hassle...

went to costco sunday--------self checkout.

he took my card, checked my photo.
another dude moved my card forward.
dude scanned my card and asked for my visa card.
took and scanned.
other dude scanned all my items .
hit yes on agree to pay.

perhaps it could be the self pleasure lane cuz i sure had the time and free hands.

evidently costco nationwide is getting VERY strict about its membership/cards usage
