self checkout is great for few items only. i don't really mind using self checkout (even for a lot of items), but it works great if you have 5 items but you have to wait behind 3 people with a buggy full of stuff in the regular line.
if most chains didn't have shirty management, they'd be able to hire and keep enough cashier's.
most chains have upped their pay but from what I've heard, they don't want to give many full time, and i just don't understand that..

An Idaho man’s theft scheme involving a literal crime ring and a soup barcode just landed him in the can.

Dylan Rockwell, 32, admitted to police that he used a ring with a hidden barcode for tomato soup to steal high-value items from Walmart in Caldwell, a suburb of Boise, the Caldwell Police Department said in a release on Monday.

Rockwell allegedly scanned the ring instead of the actual product barcodes to pay a fraction of their cost, the release said.

The incident occurred Sunday evening after officers responded to a reported theft in progress at Walmart. While police were en route to the scene, Rockwell exited the store and was heading westbound on Cleveland Boulevard in his vehicle, CPD said.

Rockwell was detained at his residence and the stolen merchandise, including a grill valued at $300, was recovered. CPD said Rockwell admitted during questioning to committing multiple thefts at Walmart over an unspecified period of time.…….

I'm kinda surprised this doesn't happen more often.

i notice now if the register thinks you are passing something across that isn't scanned, it will throw up the red light and not let you keep going..

but also, anyone else feel like they get bullied by the Walmart order fillers?

The Walmart near me has 15-20 self-checkout lines. On any given day, half of them are out of order and there are still lines. I asked an employee why these self-checkout counter are always down. She said "we don't have enough staff" I replied I thought that was the point, to reduce staffing needs. She said "Look at that line. Walmart won't fix anything as long as there are people waiting in lines"

She's right you know. I usually go to Aldi where there is almost never a line, and if there is, all the self-checkout counters are working. Piss on Walmart.

I hate stores that have 10-20 registers but only 2-5 are open with cashiers

That means there are long lines at those registers and the self checkouts

I can’t believe that I’m suggesting this but if the store knows that they are never going to have more cashiers just tear down the unused registers and put in more of the damned self checkouts

The Spouts by my place never has enough registers open. There will be 20 staff on the floor doing various things and the line backed up for miles in both the self-checkout and the only open manned register and they do nothing about it. I try to avoid going there as much as possible but there are a few essentials I get there that I can't find at the other grocery stores.

Really the only time I've ever seen more than a handful of those things open is during the Thanksgiving-Christmas holiday season.

I’m no a bit nervous and maybe preemptively sad - clearly Aldis has upped its advertising budget by several 100s%
That usually means a board room is trying to get fatter which means the suckage is imminent
