couldn't they just make something like TSA bag scanner - load your groceries on one side - they scan through while you start to bag on the other side?

You know what would be cool? If they paid a person to stand there and make sure all of your stuff got scanned and put it into bags for you.

I hope they don't get rid of it completely.

I like not having to interact with another human when i get groceries.
the best approach would be just have more employees monitoring them. You can still have less cashiers, and more registers. I know the ones around here they usually have one person monitoring like 10 registers. May have a 2-1 or 3-1 ratio would be beneficial. seems like if they just tear them out, thats a lot of money wasted, probably more than they are losing..
if they are gonna go back to a lack of open man powered registers, i feel like that would entice people back to the local stores where they don't have to wait 20 minutes to check out, offsetting that 2% or so that they are losing with self checkout.

having options is the key
i'd rather go through human checkout - but if there is one human checkout lane and 4 overflowing carts already lined up, it forces the issue
Trader Joe's usually has all 8-10 lines open and even when it's 3 carts deep, the lines move fairly quickly bc they know how to scan and bag
otoh whole foods will minimize as much as possible while still looking like they're accommodating (2-3 at best)
Winn Dixie will have one lane open no matter what

i think the rule of thumb should be open another lane when the other lanes get 3 carts deep

Thats the issue Walmart has had forever tho. They rarely had the cashiers to have enough lanes open to keep the lines down. There is an Albertsons close to where i used to live, they made Walmart lines look like child play. I hated that location and only went in there when it was a last option.

I prefer human checkout, especially at the grocery so I don't have to figure out produce.

Costco has self-checkout figured out pretty well, because it's well manned, but the key is let the customer use the scan gun, and that seems to come and go. I have been chastised for grabbing it a few times.

The hybrid solution that works is express lane only. I refuse to use self-checkout at the grocery store. If I'm in pharmacy getting Preparation H, and Neosporin. I would prefer to use self-checkout.

I think self-checkout should be reserved for those with only a few items. Like not more that you can carry in your hands. It's come to my attention that those with full carts really suck at self-checkout. I love it when women scan the entire full grocery cart with one hand, while holding their wallet in the other. I've seen people on their phones the entire time, relegating them to one-handed also.

Make access to the self-checkout area too narrow for a cart to fit through.

Aldi is the same. You look at the lines and think "Damn, Ima have to wait" Nope, those cashiers don't play, they fill the cart, then you move to the bagging area and bag it yourself. Quick and efficient.
