Only time I dislike them is on days like yesterday.

My oldest was waiting in the car and texted asking why it was taking so long... so I took a picture of the line.

Two of the self checkout lanes were broken, and the store just was not staffed to open more registers.
I’m leaving the store if the line is that long

And if I have a basket when that decision is made I’ll put all the items back

I hate the people that just leave their cart in the aisle then leave the store

I’ve seen it happen more than once

I will just going through the clerk lines. The self checkout aren’t typically faster. And I don’t hate minimal hman interaction
we obviously don't shop at the same stores.
if I have a choice of waiting behind five people with baskets, and I can go through a self checkout, you can have all the human interaction you want, I'm going through self checkout.
I was at the Racetrac in Airline after the Saints preseason game. there are at least 10 people in the checkout line, but 2 open self checkouts. boom, 30 seconds and I was gone.
Same with the Circle k by my house in Prairieville. self checkout, screw waiting on all those people buying cigarettes and lottery tickets. I'll get my human interaction elsewhere..

Because I got tired of incompetents screwing up my curbside orders.
I've been making weekly delivery orders for 4+ years now in CA, AZ, TX, LA, etc and I can count on one hand the number of times an order has been screwed up. Even then, it's still more efficient and hassle-free than going into stores to shop.

because I never really know what groceries I'm getting until I'm looking at them..
You don't know what you ordered?

I'm still trying to figure out why people still go in the store at all anymore?
Usually to look at beer, sometimes "stop on the way". Otherwise I usually do curbside or sometimes delivery as well. Delivery won't bring me alcohol though (and obviously costs a little more).

You're significantly luckier than I am, then. I went from doing it all the time during the peak of the pandemic to almost never because how frequently they were bungling orders.

Or items "xyz" are out, for only for me to pull around to a normal parking place, get out and walk inside and and grab "xyz".

That sucks, dude. Avoiding grocery stores brings me so much joy.

Some of the CVS stores have them. I was at one last week and this elderly gentleman was having difficulty with the self-checkout machine. I asked him if he needed assistance and he said that it kept rejecting his card and asking for a chip. I showed him that he could either do touch-less or insert the chip end of the card into the machine and follow the prompts, and all was well. Then he grabbed my arm and said “thank you, but you know what CVS, Walmart, and these other bozos can do with these self things? Shovel them all the way up their arses!” :covri:

One of my local Circle Ks installed a couple of new self-checkout machines, and they are pretty awesome. You walk up to them with your handful of items, and set the items on the table. A camera identifies everything you have and adds it all up. Swipe your card, and head out. No scanning.
