Shooter incident at elementary school in Uvalde, Texas - 19 children and 2 adults dead (2 Viewers)

It's already happening - I'm not going to post tweets because this will get too political and deviate from the social issue we're discussing.

But the lawmakers beholden to the 2A lobby and constituency are already publicly stating that the president wants to "take our guns away".

This shuts down this discussion at the start. It makes reasonable debate about ancillary issues totally impossible. It's disgusting.

so we are basically held captive by that lobby/constituency. Stalemated by folks who were brainwashed into thinking that gun legislation will lead to loss of freedoms.

Every gun owner i know is all for stricter gun control laws. But they arent easily duped either.

I feel that the only way a solution has any reasonable political chance, is if all members of Congress(Senate and House) vowed and signed a pledge to not attack their opponents over gun control. Thereby removing the "fear" of retaliation via political ads and messages at campaign time. But that will only happen the day after a comet destroys the Earth.

Yes. Outrage, usually manufactured, is our most valuable political currency in 21st Century America.

I have an 18 yr old off to college this fall to be an educator.

I have a 13 yr old that just 5 years ago, could have been any one of those photos.

my heart aches.

This morning was another typical morning for us. I got my girls up and got their breakfast made while their mother helped them get dressed, hair, etc. I took them to school like I always do because my office is right down the road. The school's flag was at half-mast.

Several times during the morning (and as I type this) I choked back tears. But I didn't tell them about the shooting, we didn't "talk about it." I couldn't come up with any reason why I needed to burden them with the reality that an elementary school in America was the scene of a mass shooting of children and their's could easily be the next. There's nothing they can do about it other than follow the practice that I know they do at school. And me talking to them about it doesn't change anything, but might only serve to raise fear and insecurity in their own precious minds, and I don't want to do that.

This evening, if they mention it because it was talked about at school, we will talk about it. But for now, we go on powerless to do a damn thing.
