Shooter incident at elementary school in Uvalde, Texas - 19 children and 2 adults dead (1 Viewer)

Meanwhile, in Florida:
In the wake of the school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, that left at least 19 students and two teachers dead, one Florida lawmaker took to Twitter and sent a veiled threat to President Joe Biden, should he take action on guns.

"I have news for the embarrassment that claims to be our President — try to take our guns and you’ll learn why the Second Amendment was written in the first place," Florida GOP Rep. Randy Fine wrote.

This is not the first time that Fine has drawn controversy, as he once referred to Palestinians as "animals" and called a fellow Jewish man a "Judenrat" when he criticized the Israeli government's policies under then-Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Typical.

If they can keep weapons out of our airplanes, they can keep them out of schools, too. They won’t, though. Too expensive, amirite.

I have long advocated for this.

Having served in the US Army and having operated the M15, and seeing exactly what it does, outside of gun collectors, there is no legitimate reason, IMO, to own an assault style rifle prior to the age of 30 or so.

But ill start at making it impossible for an 18 year old to purchase and own.
Its not just that...there are different variations of the AR that can shoot way more potent calibers of ammo than the 5.56. You have the 308/7.62 Nato, .458 SOCOM, .50 Beowulf and others...and I think its criminal to allow an 18 year old to buy something that can literally shoot someone's head off. The seriously effed up part is that 18 year olds are blocked from buying handguns, but can buy a way more potent rifle...what kind of sense does this make...who is the asshat that lobbied for that stipulation.

TBH, the pics they showed looked like AR-10s (.308) to me....I might be wrong, but still, why in the hell are kids allowed to buy something that can shoot this legally? What is wrong with this GD place:

This thread was hard enough to read already. Now I see that one of the children looks just like my youngest daughter. I feel ill.
I don't mean this to hurt you personally - I really, really don't - but, as another poster referenced earlier...Jesus, the courage of Mamie Till....

I really despise the doxxing of public servants, but I think I could get behind an effort for every senator that's against HR8 to have before-and-after pictures of these beautiful children greet them as they pull out of their driveway every morning.

You are not going to change the 2nd amendment; PERIOD, end of story.

It is time in this country, where Republicans/Democrats, blacks/whites/hispanics/orientals, cast aside their political positions and march in great numbers on Washington and demand stricter laws and to demand more funding for those who need their mental health issues addressed.
These posts, back to back, really perfectly represents the difficulty with attempting to discuss this matter productively. I want to ask this deeper, hypothetical question first before I address your post.

What if language could be written that changed the 2A in a way that allowed federal legislation to be written that lessened events like this while simultaneously preserving the rights of private gun owners. Would you support that? What would be so wrong with that? But, far too often, when something like this occurs, persons rush to the debate with the "pry it from my dead cold hands" rhetoric and make preservation of the 2A the priority, when in actuality, the human and moral thing to do is to say, you know 10 year olds being shredded like Swiss cheese is a no for me. If I have to wait longer to purchase, undergo more stringent checks, have a federal license, be required to take more annual trainings or be responsible for private sells...you see, very few lead with their priorities in check. The lead is always "my 2A, my guns." To be frank, it reeks of white supremacy and white privilege.

Which brings me to my point concerning you quoting me. Because, I can tell my discussion of the 2A went over your head. If you know my posting history, you would know I'm not some big change the 2A or repeal the 2A supporter. You see when I said I don't care what the founding fathers intended and rights change/evolve, my impetus for saying that isn't what you think it is.

Even a cursory examination of the 2A and its history would reveal that part of its inclusion to the Bill of Rights wasn't just an argument for state's rights and protection from government tyranny but, also, to maintain slavery, ie preserve slave patrols. Now, off the bat, I will admit there is some pushback to that notion and I have read multitudes of literature from both viewpoints. Yet, I've read enough to know that there is some merit to the idea that part of the "well regulated militia" part of the 2A was meant to allow southern states to codify into law the ability to personally weaponize themselves and maintain slave patrols, organized groups of white men, armed, who enforced discipline among enslaved blacks.

What's less debated, and just quietly accepted, was that the 2A was written in a way to avoid arming free blacks. James Madison insisted the right to bear arms be tied to being in a militia because, in the South, only white men could join militias. Slaves who joined northern militaries were being freed after their service and the South was afraid of all these free black men arming themselves and "rebelling" so they wanted legal protection to avoid that. Jefferson had submitted a draft constitution for Virginia that said "no freeman shall ever be debarred the use of arms within his own lands or tenements". That version was rejected because "it would have given to free blacks the constitutional right to have firearms".

White. Supremacy. So, from that prism, yeah I really don't care what they "intended." Colonial America is so far removed, outdated and yes, immoral to modern day America why would anyone be staunchly supporting its original intent. You are right; measures can be taken that don't include repealing or restructuring or even touching the 2A. But I really don't get this fervent dedication to an amendment as priority, written in a way that no longer is applicable for American life.

My goodness. I feel your concern fellow Saints fan. Sad you have to live everyday being worried. The worry is real.

It is time in this country, where Republicans/Democrats, blacks/whites/hispanics/orientals, cast aside their political positions and march in great numbers on Washington and demand stricter laws and to demand more funding for those who need their mental health issues addressed. And having a prescription written to take a pill, is not addressing the mental health problem

I agree we need to change how mental health is talked about and dealt with in this country

Tremendous strides have been made in that regard but no where near enough

I seem to remember an article saying that there are fewer mental health facilities now than there were in the 70s when the poulation was a lot lower and mental health was talked about and accepted a lot less

and BTW the term Orientals fell out of favor 30+ years ago

We’re trying to teach you that guns are the problem.
I think he means education of his values.

Sounds like a threat on the president's life. Lock him up.
