Six percent of people think they can beat a grizzly bear (1 Viewer)

No, the best advice is to slowly walk away and do not run. Running away is a sign of a prey animal. Humans are not
usually on a bears menu. The most dangerous ones are females with cubs. Running away will trigger the predator
instinct. It was mentioned earlier, but Usain Bolt can't outrun a bear.

I'm no bear expert. My dad managed a campground in Cooper Landing AK. in his retirement years. This was the advice
given to him from park rangers.

What I've heard is:

Black bears are easily scared off.

Brown bears you should slowly try to walk away.

Polar bears you're already dead.

Best to assume you're not taking any of them on in a fight lol.

I could easily out run a bear. When I'm scared I make the Flash look like slow motion

You can play dead with a bear though and it'll lose interest so one can survive a bear attack. Beating it though in a fight is entirely different.

Naw, that old notion has been dispelled years ago….I got the same advice that Face posted prior from a park ranger in Yellowstone…..also those idiots who think a gun is some kind of deterrent….your chances of hitting a bear with one fatal shot is very slim…guess what happens when you injure said bear….Bear spray that can launch a 50-60 foot stream is the best deterrent….

About 10 years ago I was dog sitting for my mom. She had a shih tzu. 11lbs. I took her on a trail walk and let her off-leash. At one point she took off running and I tried to catch her. I couldn’t.

I can’t out-run a shih tzu, I most definitely can’t out-run a bear.
You don't need to outrun the bear. Just outrun the friend you went hiking with.

The first and only comment on the article linked in OP is probably one of the ones who thinks he would win. He States:

"I would point out that frontiersmen, documented, did kill grizzlies hand to hand - but with a knife inserted in just the right spot to hit the heart. Without a knife you are going to be dinner...and modern men without experience of this sort of thing likely would be digesting in a matter of minutes."

I know I would think that hand to hand kinda precludes you having a knife!!!!

I got sprayed in the face with bear mace. It wasn't pleasant.

What do you do if you come across an elephant?
Don't run in a straight line. Make quick turns. Due to their massive bulk they can't cut corners like we can. We have greater
endurance. If you are reasonably fit they'll give up after a short chase.
