Sneaux next week [Historic snowstorm in southeast Louisiana on January 21, 2025] (50 Viewers)

Gotta look into it again. Last time I checked -- around 2012 -- it was around $600 to maybe get the files off, no guarantees. I think if they can get the hard drive to spin, they can get the files. The disc isn't physically damaged.
If it’s clicking, they have to open it up in a clean room and replace parts. Cost is obviously way up there.

Otherwise, it’s possible to get the data off at home, but I wouldn’t risk it with irreplaceable data. We got some off of flooded Katrina drives, but those were always risky.

I'm about 99% sure (but going from memory) that it never made a clicking noise. One day, the computer just wouldn't boot up ... it was essentially inert. Can't recall a noise, a lot like the machine was unplugged, say. Made me think something that was supposed to make the hard drive spin just failed suddenly and that was it.

Might make a new thread about it after the snow stuff.

EDIT: If it makes a difference ... it would be fine with me if they destroyed the hard drive in the process of getting the files off of it. Not sure if that would allow them to skip the clean room or not.

Everyone in Louisiana currently
Around here, AT-ATs would me marching in Endymion. Drunk "snowtroopers" tethered on to the interior, throwing cups out of the side doors.

And the things would drop a hunk of metal out of their hindquarters every few blocks.
