Some FA CBs to look at... (1 Viewer)

I am so against drafting a CB early. Did anyone see the other thread about success ratio (or lack of) when drafting top 6 CB's? The general rule is that it takes a CB a few years to develop....that is assuming that they ever pan out.

I would rather give up a first on an established CB then draft one. I just think it is hit or miss. The Saints can't afford a miss, especially after last year's draft.

Florence would be a stop gap type player. I read that he's best as a nickel back and I feel we need a #1 or #2 considering our position.

After the top three: Samuel, Asomugha and Trufant.... Florence is ranked fourth. The talent level falls dramatically though with Florence on down. Some others though by rank would be: Brian Kelly(Tampa), Eric Green (Zona), Randall Gay (NE), Reynaldo Hill (Titans) and Jason Webster (Buffalo).

We may have no choice but to go after some of these guys. At the moment I'm just not sure which of these guys may have it in them to take it to the next level. Can any be trusted to man up on a receiver?

Eric Green carries a 3rd round compensation as a RFA, unless Arizona tenders him at the highest level... I would give up our 3rd round pick for Green in a FREAKIN HEARTBEAT! That dude was on his way to becoming a lock-down CB prior to the groin injury last year, and if he can be had, we'd be stupid not to go and get him.

With that said, Zona will most likely tender him with the 1st and 3rd round compensation.

especially after last year's draft.

Alleman & Bushrod still haven't played. Usama saw limited action. Meachum was injuried. PT was a diamond in the rough, so Pittman became expendable. I think the verdict is still out on last years draft.

If the best player is a cb @ 10 great.

I know we all had our sights set on Trufant or Samuels, but now that that's not going to happen, we need to start looking at solid, consistent second tier guys who can fill in.
What do you guys think about this group of guys as possible signings?

  1. Ricardo Colclough
  2. Drayton Florence
  3. Domonique Foxworth
  4. Hank Poteat
  5. Jeff Shoate
  6. B.J. Sams
I know we've all discussed Florence, and BJ Sams has some injury concerns, but I think one or more of these guys could possibly be a Saint next year. I think Foxworth is an interesting possibility. I'd be happy if we picked him up as depth/competition. He started some games in Denver and held his own. He is 5'11", and has also played safety. Colclough has also shown potential. What would you guys think if picked up one or two of these guys and drafted a playmaker at safety?

None of these guys are upgrades over Jason Craft or David... Down with Disease mentions Eric Green, whom I like as well, but the Cardinals will probably tender him with a #1 or #2 pick, which should scare off most teams.

Again, let's just see who gets cut or see what kind of deal you can get for a Lito Sheppard or DeAngelo Hall if they are actually trade bait, and not just some internet rumor.

In the draft, you could probably pick up a very solid cover corner in the 3rd or 4th round (Samuel was a 4th round pick for the Patriots), but stick with the plan of rebuilding your front seven first.

You know Bonchie, in my heart I know thats what will have to happen. The thing is that I almost feel as though I'd be giving up on the season already. We know we're not going anywhere with this defense. The injuries, the sub par talent and then rookies coming in to fill the holes. WOW! Thats a tall order just to get last years team competitive.

I'm just hoping something can be pull out of a hat for us. Maybe something could magically happen with D Hall? Miracles do happen.....

Why are we going nowhere with this Defense. Minus Mckenzie this D is the same as the one we went to the NFCCG. Add Starks from Tenn, Possibly Briggs, Florence, a 2nd round LB (who will be an improvement over our starters) and possibly a corner in the draft and we have a decent D. Sure it is not All World or anything but improved. Our D looked horrible last year because our prize D-ends looked overwieght and slow which gave QB's all kinds of time to exploit our poor secondary.

If the D-Line coach gets the ends in shape and we get Starks we will be able to generate a decent pass rush which will help our secondary. Not to mention if we pick up two starters at LB thus getting rid of Shanle and Sim who knows what that will do to our D. What does a D look like that has both MLB and WLB with 90+ tackles?

The O is very very inconsistant I don't know if you would call them potent but they do have potential. If our OL can significantly improve then our O will approach being dominant but as it is we get absolutely no push and are man-handled by physcial teams. We lost like 3 backs to injury last year as they were consitently blasted in the backfield or had to attempt to run over players to get yards because of the lack of holes.

I truly believe that if this team might make a run at it next year. This O is on the verge of being dominant with a few acquisitions (via Draft or FA) and the D has potential.

This is just about every prominent "shutdown" man corner in the game. If our defensive philosophy is man, then it's time to invest like one.
