And I get that as an audience member. We know too much about story structure, comic books, and sequel movies already in production to believe that all of these deaths are final.

But I think within the context of the movie, this worked. The characters who didn’t turn to ash certainly don’t know their loved ones are coming back, and they sold that heartbreak and loss. The characters who did turn to ash sold their deaths. Bucky trying to make his way over to his best friend, Groot evaporating in front of Rocket, and Spider-Man both being such a frightened kid while also trying to apologize to “Mr. Stark” are the ones that landed on me like a ton of bricks.

Even though several of those deaths are only temporary, I thought they were earned through the buildup of the power of Thanos and the gauntlet, and the reactions from the characters.

I also think there will be some who will remain perma-dead.

IW2, Stark sacrifices himself to save everyone else

There's a Spider-man movie coming out next summer a couple of months after Avengers 4, so it's safe to say that the situation isn't permanent. I think someone pointed out that a lot of the actors whose characters survived are set to "retire," so they'll likely get a chance to go out with a bang and then transition to the next wave of heroes.

The Stark sacrifice seems like a good bet, and Dr. Strange and the time stone are obviously key. Strange's mission is to protect the stone, he clearly states he'll sacrifice Tony and Peter to protect the stone, he looks into the future and sees one viable scenario, which leads him to do an about face and sacrifice the stone to protect Tony. So yeah, Tony has a role to play.

But what a ******* movie, and what an amazing cinematic accomplishment in universe building! With the trailers its about a 3 hour experience, but it moves so fast. The writing is so tight, everything transitions so smoothly. The characters are all so well developed from the previous films, yet they're never forced to do anything out of character to advance the plot, and you feel each loss. Fantastic!

I’ve mentioned it in the other thread, but I truly hope one day that someone does a documentary and or a definitive book on the behind the scenes work/build-up of this universe to this key point. That would be a major take my money moment for me.

That movie legit shook me. Like, I needed a drink when I got home. There were people crying in the theater. Just well done all around. I don't think any comic movie aside from Logan has given such a range of feels.

I didn't expect so many characters to "ash out", that was a significant part of the team. I would expect Loki, Gamora, Vision and Heimdall are gone for real. What's interesting is how do you undo this with the Sorcerer Supreme gone? But Cap and IM are only still alive for now. The title of 4 is supposed to be a spoiler for 3 - speculation?

2. Unlike others, I hated Hulk not coming out. Scared Hulk is not something I ever want to see. Especially off the heels of Ragnarok where Hulk wanted to stay out for good. Speaking of Ragnarok, a main theme of that movie was that Thor was not the "God of hammers" but he had the power inside of him. Now he needed a new weapon that made him OP? And where was Valkyrie and Korg? Seemed to be a disconnect from that movie to this one. And how did Thor heal so quickly?

Didn't Odin make some comment about Mjolnir being almost like focus for his power? The Axe can summon the Bifrost, so they obviously have some additional power beyond what the holder has.

I assume that played a part in the fast healing. That and the whole "he's a god" thing.

This is the first time where Thor wasn’t “watered-down” IMO. His true power shined in this movie.
I liked everything about the movie, especially how they knew about Thanos and the gaunlet, but really weren’t prepared for the sheer power that the dude was wielding. They didn’t even really have a chance to prepare, talk to each other, plan or anything. They were in “fight for our lives and don’t let this dude get all these stones” - mode from the get-go.

This has to be the most motivated Thor's ever been as well.. Previously, he was content to be Thor, wielder of Mjolnir and heir to the throne of Asgard. Now, (Thor:Ragnarok spoiler alert) he's assumed the throne of Asgard, which is promptly destroyed, and all of the people he's to protect have now been wiped out by Thanos, including his brother.

did anyone think of the movie Snatch when Thanos was asking the collector where the stone was??

in Snatch, Del Toro was the one asking the exact same question...

random and probably not related other than Del Toro...

Fantastic villain. I will put Thanos close to Ledger's Joker (yeah, I went there). As stated earlier in this thread, Thanos has his own beliefs and is actually trying to make the universe a better place. He is willing to sacrifice those he loves for the greater good (the greater good). He just isn't some jerk on a power trip.

Similarly, the Joker isn't a jerk on a power trip. Rather, he is someone with something to prove (that everyone is just like him--they just need a bad day). Give into chaos, and your life will be better (why be a hamster on a wheel?). If anything, the Joker doesn't want power. There is a belief system for him (as warped as it may be) that he sticks to--just like Thanos did.

I almost wish that they would end this version of the Marvel Universe with this movie, because I think any movie that follows will lessen it. They will find a way to bring everyone back and it will make the sacrifices less in my opinion. It will be harder to stay vested in characters that can die and be brought back to life. One of the reasons I think DC went too soon into the Death of Superman arc.

They sure could have used Ant Man on Titan. Throw a disk on the gauntlet to make it bigger, when if falls off, another disk to make it smaller--then take it and run away.

Stark + Shuri = A new vibranium guantlet coded to a hero? Then Ant Man goes quantum into the stones to restore their power. Now, to get those stones. :hihi:

I did hear a rumor that the title of the follow up was leaked and it is Avengers: Endgame.
