A few months ago, I received a letter from the Louisiana Department of Revenue (LDR) claiming that I had unpaid taxes for 2022. Since I haven’t lived or worked in Louisiana since 2018, I initially dismissed it as a clerical error.

However, yesterday I received another letter from the LDR, this time with detailed numbers. The letter claims I owe $5,400 in back taxes. Given that I haven’t had any connection to Louisiana in over six years, I’m at a loss as to why I’m being issued this bill.

Has anyone else encountered a similar issue with the LDR (or any state)? If so, how did you go about contesting it? Any advice or insights would be greatly appreciated.

I put you down as my co-signer and just forgot to pay my taxes
I didn’t think you would mind

Closest I have is I received a bill one year because I forgot to file. So went through the whole filing process, turned out they actually owed me money and it just died there.

So you didnt call them when you received the first letter? just assumed it was a mistake?

is the second letter, with detail, still a mistake? or in fact, correct?

Id probably start with either a phone call or email to inquire as to the dispute process.

definetly call and speak with someone. better to know first hand if they are about to screw you over somehow, than be blindsided by it.

No, I didn’t call when I received the first letter as I thought that it was just a clerical error (I haven’t lived or worked in Louisiana since 2018).

I don’t know where the numbers on the 2nd letter were pulled from as I haven’t worked in the state in over 6 years. I will call them and ask for the foundation of this letter.

It could be identity theft or maybe someone with the same name and different ssn. I would verify that they have the correct personal info. I had a mix up with my ssn back in the 80s and it took forever for me to get it fixed.

Could be a bill from revenue but related to uncanceled car plates or some other fees that'll build.

Best take care of it cuz they will garnish your fed return.

I actually had this experience.

I once owed back taxes to California because when I moved to Oregon, and my moved was paid for, I deducted mileage that I should not have.(I used my car for work so I deduct a lot of mileage) I owed them like $900 if I would have paid it in my taxes.

By the time I got the first letter it was five years later and I owed them $5800. They don't care you don't know you owed them money, the interest accrues.

I was incredulous and called them. They said send a letter explaining why I thought I didn't owe the money etc. I got a letter back like 6 weeks later denying my claim as the tax code is what it is. Now I owed them $6200. I paid the bill.

Moral of the story - call them to ensure it's you and if it is set up a payment plan. You won't win if you owe them money. But the interest never stops accruing.

I called the LDR and explained the situation (to 3 different people), and the end result was, “send us an email with your w-2 from 2022 and we can clear your account.”

I’m not sure if they were saying my bank account or the case, but I’m hoping it doesn’t rob me of getting that DA visor (that I have been eyeballing for months) for Christmas.

I'm sure they'll be giving those away.

Good result - sounds like it will be resolved without you having to do anything more than that.
