Taysom Hill and Route Running (3 Viewers)

Don't you think he will be more of a move/hybrid TE that splits out and runs WR routes? I just can't see him consistently being used an as in-line blocker. He seems more likely to be split out or put in motion running WR routes as basically a big slot WR.
Valid point and the truth is IDK.

I could also see him lining up in a splitback formation behind Winston split with a HB.

It does seem unlikely that he can turn into an elite route runner at his age. But, don't you think his experience at QB (along with the time he has spent running routes in past years) will give him a leg up on most 30+ guys learning to be better route runners? It just seems to me that as a former QB, he already knows the route trees, knows how defenses will react to different formations, knows what a TE should do on an option route based on the look, and has to have some idea what makes a bad route vs. a good route. It seems it will be more about him putting what he knows into practice and making it routine and repeatable. Which is no doubt difficult, but he isn't starting from scratch.

I don't doubt his ability to improve but I also think maximizing his strengths would entail not expanding so much on the route tree he's already been running and excelling at.

Do you suddenly start having him run vertical routes or deep outs or in's? I think not

Fair enough. I guess I'm just fascinated by the idea that with his speed, Hill could be a real threat running vertical routes in the seems. A threat that we haven't had since Cooks. But, I don't know how difficult it is to learn to run that kind of route so I'll have to defer to others with more knowledge than I have.

Reading this thread makes me wonder if people on this forum watch games a Sundays. Cause if they did, they would know that Hill has produced in this league for several years now, whether at TE, WR, RB, QB or special teams. He has scored tds by throwing, running and receiving. He has blocked punts and returned kickoffs at a high level. I remember the Minn playoff game where people were upset that he didn’t get more touches, seeing as he was carrying he team.

Maybe we should be happy to have a guy that does so many things and does them well.

I pretty much agree with this, I think he will be fine at the TE/H-back role full time. He probably won't have to worry about a complex route tree, as someone stated, in our offense they usually run seam or short routes in space....he could be very productive in that capacity IMO....we will see....

I think a lot of people are getting hung up on the term "tight end." As a lot of said here, it will definitely be a unique H-back role putting him on the line, in the slot, wild cat, RB, FB....etc. just find ways to get the ball in his hands. There is no way they will be using him as a traditional in-line tight end. I don't think Taysom will be asked to block...

Just think as Taysom as a undrafted free agent out of Ihaveneverheardofim college just because he has caught a few passes and several td pases really doesn't mean anything. I agree with your points and most of all good luck. Taysom will be a work in progress there so it will take time but the good thing is if it fails you can put him in other places because he is such a good athlete.
Really? First of all, you have never heard of Brigham Young ?

Yeah I have that's the college Steve Young came out of . It was another way of saying he is just like a rookie coming from a obscure college in regards to the TE position.

I guess we should just come and say he has the talent to be the next Tony Gonzales only tougher because he has ran some routes and can catch is so strong and fast and leap over players with the greatest of ease.

Taysom was a QB at Brigham Young which he is not in the NFL at least most importantly for the Saints. Let's see him stay in the TE position and see how it works out I don't think what he has done in the past is any indication of how good or bad he can be at the TE position. The idea that he can just go anywhere on the field and have a huge impact is a bit overboard. I hope he does do well because it only helps us win and him earn the money that is being paid that goes for every player. So yeah really.

i get it, you hate taysom.

see, that was so much shorter and to the point.

taysom the football player is a proven commodity on the field in numerous ways, to argue anything else is pretty dense.

No not at all I like Taysom I just think that you say oh well let's make him a tightend he will be a star because he is the Taysom and he can do it all. Hill is a amazing talented player but I just go by what I can see and observe and yeah he has potential and the ability but I don't agree with the opinion that he will be good just because he has produced everywhere.

Taysom has ball security issues let's see him work on that too.
Just because I don't slobber over him and complement him his name comes up well I am sorry . I don't think he is a QB and the best thing that could have happened did he is out of that QB room,so yeah I dislike him as a QB period other than that he is a GREAT ASSET TO THE TEAM.

So if you want to assume and tell me that I hate a player just because I don't agree with your point of view go ahead but that's extremely dense and arrogant which apparently well you must be because I am assuming you are just like you assume I sniff...sniff hate your Taysom.

I live to argue so we can just drop the dense and hate assumptions and just end it here but please don't ever call me dense again because it's the person labeling with arrogance that is the ignorant one here. You make think you are funny but you aren't and it makes you look foolish thinking you are some tough guy.

You're pretending like they are doing something with Taysom that they haven't already done and that Taysom has not already had success with. All of this Taysom hate is so freaking nauseating. You're so glad someone who has and gone 7-2 as a Saints starting qb is out the qb room but there's still guys like Ian Book in the room that doesn't bother you. The fact remains that Taysom is such a great AND MUCH NEEDED asset as his joker/H back role, the role that you seem to think he hasn't proven himself already, that they are telling him just to focus on that. Taysom literally has to prepare his body for one or the other. That is the other challenge of remaining in the qb room.

Pointing out things that Hill has to work on is not "hating on Taysom" or "Taysom hate."

Just like pointing out that Winston needs to work on throwing short routes is not hating on Winston.

I'm sorry, he's typing sentences like below thinking it has some sort of solid meaning behind it. It's pure hatred of a player.

but I don't agree with the opinion that he will be good just because he has produced everywhere.

He called Hill this: "Hill is a amazing talented player"

How can you call that pure hatred?

Did you read how he ended that same sentence? It was like he was pretending he's not something (taysom hater) when in fact he goes straight to his opinion that He in fact is preaching the opposite of the beginning of the sentence. His hyperbolic ridiculous claim that if he's not a star like tony gonzales then essentially he's a tight end bust. He's enamored with this tight end label.
