I love chess and bought this for $1 somewhere, and it turned out to be a surprisingly good documentary/biopic/cautionary tale.

Posits that IBM couldn't beat the world's greatest chess player legitimately, so they did it the IBM way instead.

Get him a book on the different openings. Once he finds out which one he likes best, and knows how to play the ones that give him trouble, he'll be pretty tough to beat since he's already pretty good.

After that, let him sign up at http://chess.emrald.net/. The problems there will help his endgame and recognition.

Thanks for all of the tips. I think I am going to take the advice of trying to get better myself so that I can atleast offer him a challenge b/c right now I can't do that. Whenever we have people over I try and find adults who play just to play him b/c the kids he plays really aren't any competition for him. There is one problem though, he's very confident and talks a lot of smack while playing.

let's hear some updates man

Good game JB.

The series of moves starting at 7b - a6 (BxN) and culminating with 11w (QxN) left you way behind on material. I dropped the N at f3 hoping to bait your e2 pawn into opening up the King / Rook fork (13w). It was a win-win for me because moving the King would have opened up a discovered attack on the rook anyway. For a while there you had me in a one move mate (Queen to d1) so I had to keep the pressure on and stay ahead in time or I would have been toast.

Good game though. I've learned a ton by going back and looking at the logs of my RHP games and seeing where I made my mistakes.
let's play again friend! i am doing chess.com though, mind signing up there?
just got my 7 year old daughter into it & she loves it. slowly easing 5 year old son into it as well. with that in mind, i need to improve myself. i would like to get good at it before i croak. i'm 35 & would like to sniff 1800 one day

Wow this is an old thread. Needless to say a lot has changed in over a year. I am currently deployed to Iraq and my son went back to live with his mom in March. I don't have many updates to this as not to long after I posted in this thread, I severely broke my leg playing football. Anyway, I'll ask him next time I talk to him how he's doing with this. He doesn't get much time on the internet so I know he's not playing online. I think the middle school he is going to this year has a chess club, that would be great if they did.

I only know one starter move in chess...

Middle two pawns move forward two spaces... Their outer pawns move one space, which creates a bit of a shield. Thanks all I got....

What generic move do I go with next?
