The latest "disease" - obesity (3 Viewers)

There was a Dr Oz episode recently that showed how the food industry has us "hooked".

For example, a bag of chips or things like that, have lots of salt.
He had a large container of water (or some other solution) with red dye in it so you could see any action.
He then put in a pinch of normal salt and it bubbled up and you could understand the party your toungue gets when you eat it.
He then put in a pinch of this "Super Salt" that the food companies use and it reacted like a volcano. It was like Mardi Gras in your mouth.

I totally agree with the "junk food junkies" assessment in your original post, but Dr. Oz advocates pseudo-science like homeopathy, and the "super salt" demonstration was probably just some trick with vinegar and baking soda.

That shouldn't stop you -- and me, for that matter -- from putting down the bag of chips and picking up a salad fork. I know I feel better when I eat better, and just a few bites of the junky stuff makes me crave more junky stuff.

It mystifies me how a guy with such an illustrious medical background can be in favor of that kind of "water memory" mumbo-jumbo.

Several of my coworkers have had some form of surgery to aid in weight loss - like the gastric bypass, for example. Most of them had to pay for their surgeries as the medical insurance companies would not cover them. I wonder if this new declaration will change how the insurance companies choose to approach these claims going forward.

Just another excuse for us Americans who struggle with our weight. I'm not huge, but I'm definitely a bit overweight. (5'10", 230lbs). I've managed to lose a good amount of weight through diet and exercise in the past. It's not impossible, I just chose to not exercise and I like to eat. That is a choice I make, not a disease.

This. I think, if you really want to, then in some cases you blame parenting for children being overweight but even then healthier food for whatever reason tends to be more expensive than non-healthy food so that's also partially dependent on income levels.

Once you reach a certain age though, it's on the individual. You can shift blame all you want but I've lost quite a bit of weight before and then just stopped working out and got big again. I've since gotten back on track in terms of working out regularly but the bottom line is I made the choice after I got down to where I wanted to be to not maintain it, wish I hadn't, trash decision but it's on me and now it's up to me to do something about it again. I'm not a fan of this "victim mentality" they try to push in a lot of situations.

Thyroid problems are a disease (or a defect), diabetes is a disease caused primarily by habitually making wrong eating choices and not doing anything about it sure, but obesity itself is not.

Maybe big pharma is ready to unveil some "miracle" weight-loss drug and that's why it's being classified that way, but the problem with that would be that people would just continue eating trash without the visual consequences and even though a high body fat percentage is unattractive to most people, in reality that's only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to eating unhealthy constantly. For example most people have or had at least one friend who seemingly can eat whatever they want and not end up overweight, but that doesn't necessarily mean they're bloodwork, energy levels, cellular function, etc. is where it should be.

Homeopathy works for some people man, it might be "pseudo-science" but it's gotten results before. I've never really gotten into it but I wouldn't knock it outright just because it's not the traditional form of medicine in this country. Though I will say I'm not really huge fan of "Dr. Oz" myself either.

Still though, if you ever actually read the ingredients on a lot of junk foods and even a lot of condiments which most people think of as an afterthought it's ridiculous how much of that stuff is concocted in a food lab.

Move more; eat less... There, I just found a cure for a disease.

I bet Lazy can't be far behind as a disease.

What a bunch of bull. There are 5 of us at work. We were all fat. Made an agreement to hold each other accountable. We have lost just a bit more than 320 pounds together. We've all run 5k races, two of us half marathons with decent times. We all average an hour a day in the gym. Disease? Surgery? drugs? Nope, just better life choices.

Maybe if it is recognized as a disease it will allow the CDC to to ban many of the processed foods we are forced to eat ... or at least mandate clear and absolute labeling of processed foods and GMO's.

Without a doubt I know our food supply is the source of obesity. Just sit down for a while and watch people on the streets, What used to be a tire around the waist is now a big pouch hanging from the stomach area and it is starting with younger and younger kids. It is disgusting!

Doubtful. High fructose corn syrup is now considered "all natural" when it comes to labeling because there isn't anything in it that isn't natural, even though there is nothing natural about it.
