True. As much as getting past 49ers in the division was a huge issue and cost the Saints home field advantage in playoff games, a big part of the problem is that the team was running an antiquated offense even for the time and frankly, Hebert was terrible in playoff games with the Saints. That team was stopped before they even faced the 49ers in the playoffs.

Totally agreed, all of Herbert's weaknesses were amplified when the stakes were highest.....he was an abysmal on the field leader....

That he was. At the same point, I do wonder what Hebert could have done in a more modern offense like he ran in the USFL. I don't think he was ever going to be great, but maybe it would have been enough to win a couple playoff games.

Don't disagree, he wasn't even the biggest problem with the offense in the playoffs, it was terrible predictable schemes and a refusal to take chances.....with a better offensive coaching staff I think he would have been.....better....no doubt....

I believe the Saints could have won multiple Superbowls back in those days.
Our defense was unworldly. The offense was adequate. I have never had a stretch of excitement for football at any point in my life to that point.
The problem was, that the Saints picked the wrong time to get good. San Fran had what we know now as having one of the best dynasties in NFL history.
We sucked for so many years, and then....well bad luck with the timing.
I believe that actually winning multiple Superbowls back then is more than a stretch. Yes, the 49ers were indeed the dominant team of that era. But the Saints weren’t missing Lombardis solely because of the San Fran Dynasty.

It was clear from the teams we lost to in the playoffs during the Mora Era (Vikings, Falcons, Bears) that the Saints (even with their great defense) still weren’t ready to win Superbowls due to having a lackluster offense.

Yes, the great Niners teams of those days may have kept us from having more chances to win the division and make the playoffs as a higher seed. But just the fact that we couldn’t get past the first round during the Mora years is proof that it was more than the 49ers that was keeping the Saints from sliding on Superbowl rings.
