Things That Make You Feel Old (3 Viewers)

I drive every day plus ive spent a lot of time outdoors in my life. I have those Cajun squint in the sun wrinkles at 43. I had to upload a photo for work and I was all...who is this old dude?
I now understand the meaning of "soft lighting"

Had a "now you're old" moment this past week.

We went on vacation last week to the beach and the waves were perfect! So, of course, last Monday, I get up at 7:00 am, grab my board and head to the water. It's 8:00 am, I am in three to four foot, peeling waves, 75 degree water, it was perfect! I was out there for four hours, just riding and riding. And then Old Man Time showed up and kicked me. All over. I was shot!! Body was weak, I was dehydrated (which was helped by vacation alcohol consumption), super tired and just worn out. I’m 52 years old, haven’t surfed/bodyboarded in two years yet I charged it like I was 25 years old. It took days for me to feel halfway right again. I go to the gym every day! I work out! I do cardio! Yet, I was using muscles I forgot about. I could recover from that, no problem…….in my 20’s to 40’s. Now?

It was right then that reality came crashing in on me and I felt…….OLD. Surfing/bodyboarding is something I love to do but I just couldn’t keep up.

It’s a very humbling, scary feeling when old shows up……..

I look at it differently, you did more than keep up....Kudos for you just getting out there and 4 hours of paddling and actively surfing is really, really good for anyone over 40.....

I just turned 60 and still jump on my skateboard and hit the public skatepark in Wilmington from time to time....I can still ride the bowls and kickturns, fakies, etc.....but no more lip slides, aerials....and after about only an hour of riding I'm pretty beat....but, hey, getting out there is what counts....

Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

And you, my father, there on the sad height,
Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

or the 64 color box with the built in sharpener

And it was always the kid who also had the Trapper Keeper and Capri Sun

I'll never forget when a fight broke out.

It was the kid who had the big box of crayons and got all the glory....before art class

Afterwards it was the kid with his 6 crayon primary color set but who could really draw that everyone was gushing over

Mr. 64 and his garbage technicolor drawing was forgotten and he didn't know what to do so he hit him

I go out for 30 minutes or so at a time, depending on how far I have to paddle to get where they’re breaking. I might do 3 sessions a day if the waves are good

But yeah, gone are the days of jumping in with only board and fins and a quarter in my pocket to ride the bus back to where I started, which could be 3-5 miles down the beach depending on the current.

This! It is this reality that really hit hard. My brain says, GO, GO, GO!! The rest of me says, are you out of your mind??

“WHO’S NEXT!?”

i now have progressive lens. never thought i would have to choose between progressive lens and bifocals. my eyes make me feel old :(
Yeah I quit wearing contact lenses because of the bifocals. They have bifocal contacts but they just didn't seem to work right for me. And rather than mess around with reading glasses, I just figured it was time to go back to glasses full time. It's great in the summer when i come inside and they fog up, or on rainy days.

I know I’m old because I’m not embarrassed by anything anymore and that is not necessarily a good thing. Case in point - yesterday. We have a very nice on-site gym at work, and I use it daily around lunch time. Now, 99.5% of the time, I’m the only one in there, which is great. Well, yesterday, I forgot to pack my tennis in my gym bag, but because I’m typically in there alone, I figured I’d work out in my shorts, tank top, long dress socks and dress shoes. Like real dress shoes - the ones that go “clickety-click” when I walk. (I had a presentation yesterday morning).

Anyway, I’m on the elliptical and what do you think happens in the gym that no one else ever comes in? Yep - Two of my direct reports come in to work out. The giggles were loud. One of them walked up to me while I’m on the elliptical and asked, “um, Paul, is everything ok?”
I was like “awesome, why?”

Her: “do you always dress like Oliver Twist to work out?

I had to laugh but I felt no shame at all. :covri:
