Things That Make You Feel Old (2 Viewers)

Had a "now you're old" moment this past week.

We went on vacation last week to the beach and the waves were perfect! So, of course, last Monday, I get up at 7:00 am, grab my board and head to the water. It's 8:00 am, I am in three to four foot, peeling waves, 75 degree water, it was perfect! I was out there for four hours, just riding and riding. And then Old Man Time showed up and kicked me. All over. I was shot!! Body was weak, I was dehydrated (which was helped by vacation alcohol consumption), super tired and just worn out. I’m 52 years old, haven’t surfed/bodyboarded in two years yet I charged it like I was 25 years old. It took days for me to feel halfway right again. I go to the gym every day! I work out! I do cardio! Yet, I was using muscles I forgot about. I could recover from that, no problem…….in my 20’s to 40’s. Now?

It was right then that reality came crashing in on me and I felt…….OLD. Surfing/bodyboarding is something I love to do but I just couldn’t keep up.

It’s a very humbling, scary feeling when old shows up……..
This truly is how you know you're getting older. Some years ago I was practicing soccer with my daughter. Blew my achilles just running in the backyard with her. Blamed it on not stretching beforehand. 2 years later I blew it again chasing a pop fly working with her at softball. That was the last time I ran. Not sure if you've ever popped an achilles but it hurts enough to put you on notice. Fast paced walk is now my top speed.

I know I’m old because I’m not embarrassed by anything anymore and that is not necessarily a good thing. Case in point - yesterday. We have a very nice on-site gym at work, and I use it daily around lunch time. Now, 99.5% of the time, I’m the only one in there, which is great. Well, yesterday, I forgot to pack my tennis in my gym bag, but because I’m typically in there alone, I figured I’d work out in my shorts, tank top, long dress socks and dress shoes. Like real dress shoes - the ones that go “clickety-click” when I walk. (I had a presentation yesterday morning).

Anyway, I’m on the elliptical and what do you think happens in the gym that no one else ever comes in? Yep - Two of my direct reports come in to work out. The giggles were loud. One of them walked up to me while I’m on the elliptical and asked, “um, Paul, is everything ok?”
I was like “awesome, why?”

Her: “do you always dress like Oliver Twist to work out?

I had to laugh but I felt no shame at all. :covri:

What Guido said.....and old? Dude you're 48.....still just a pup....

And I've had that attitude since my early 20's....not that I've never been embarrassed but it takes something pretty major for me to care about it....

teduschi trucks band came to toledo--- i know the head of security at the place and he comped me admission and parking . failed to give me a wristband for the "mosh pit".

met up with friends in the pit and immediately went back outta the pit to purchase beers.

upon re-entering said pit --rent-a-force wouldn't let me back in because of said missing wristband.

I called BS and was immediately told I was without a ticket or wristband and was accused of hopping the fence to gain admittance. My reply of being 60 and quite unable to scale a 12 foot fence was met with a circle of bright yellow shirts escorting me out of the west entrance while my car was in the east.

I called BS once again---- I wasn't walking 2 miles around the park to get to my car on the other side of the park, and was pronounced a felon and the biggest, baddest yellow shirt called over a nearby Toledo police officer.

The fine officer said " Hey Dan---what's going on?" Officer Zelenski and I have been doing business for years.

Had a great time flipping off the sea of fuming yellow as that fine officer walked me 400 yards to my car.

Sometimes old and knowing folks is a bonus.

The USS Antietam CG-54 is due to be decommissioned in Sept of this year. I'm a plankowner. I was there when it was being built at Ingalls in Pascagoula. The pipes and fittings In Combat Information Center, or Combat, had their first coat of paint and designations applied by me. I was 20/21 yrs old. Now, it's going to the great cruiser port in the sky. Yeh, that makes me feel a bit older than I should.

Please tell us he asked to send over a bottle of bubbly with a bucket of ice and a card. Have it say, "Tough break, get drunk on me. Use the bucket to ice down your marbles, Yours, Z."

Tedeski trucks band is awesome, but a mosh pit at their show?
Must be an Ohio thing?

Man, sorry you missed TTB, their live shows are incredible....but a mosh pit? At a TTB show? Must have been the oldest moshers in history.....

I apologize if this topic has already been mentioned, but over 20 years later, thinking about me watching Saturday morning cartoons like X-Men animated series, BTAS, Justice League, ABC’s Saturday morning cartoon lineup that was so popular, long-lasting from early 70’s-early 2000’s.

Remembering watching so many great cartoon shows and the excitement I felt as a kid in the mid-late 80’s/early 90’s makes me feel very nostalgic and a bit old.

Want to relive those saturday mornings? Go to Mone Media on YouTube. He has a lot of them, including the commercials.
