TIL: my new favorite place to casually drop in conversation.

The fracture zone is the spreading of the Juan de Fuca ridge, pushing apart the Pacific and Juan de Fuca plates.

The Cascadia subduction zone runs just off the Oregon and Washington Coastline and is where the Juan de Fuca plate subducts under the North American Plate.

ETA: and there was another 6.0 eathquake off the NW coast.

The ‘h’ in ‘ghost‘ is a historical hiccup. William Caxton, having first practised his trade in Flanders, brought Flemish typesetters back to England to help set up his printing press - they lobbed an ‘h’ into English ‘gost’ because their own native word was ‘gheest’.

See, this is the type of interesting thing that brings me back to thinking the internet is ok sometimes.

I thought gheest was plural….

I had some good teachers, but they were few and far between. Most were pretty forgettable.
I had some very good teachers in high school and excellent college professors.

In high school I tended to be a bit of a delinquent. I was applying for admission to a good college, and it required two personal letters of reference, two from teachers, and one from my high school principal. The first four of those were easy, but I had "concerns" about the principal due to our somewhat fractious relationship at times.

I sucked up my nerve and went to his office one day after class. I asked his secretary if Mr Sarbanes was in. She buzzed in and advised him I was here, and asked if he had a moment to see me. I heard "Send him in" I entered his office and he greets me with "Mr Terps, I see you're here of your own free will. To what do I owe this honor?" I told him why I was visiting, and he was actually really cool. He said my friends and I tested the rules constantly and, off the record, he appreciated it. Told me come back tomorrow and you'll have the letter.

Nest day true to his word, I had my letter of reference.
