Trevor Penning will work at LT and RT during OTAs (OTA update: Penning moved to RT) (1 Viewer)

So, all the other offensive lineman except for Peat are a good "scheme" fit? Sorry, I don't buy it......

Lots of changes and lots of risk IMO with the oline, it will either all work well or fall flat, we will see what happens....
You just don't want to buy it. You are a very hard person to budge. It pulls on me because I want to teach but it annoys me because I see the same level of willfulness I see in myself, except I've learned to yield over the years to reasonable data and you've clearly not. Though it appears your path is similar in that as you age you'll learn to be less dogmatic.

Lets go

Every potential starting option or top depth piece on the roster either has experience in outside zone (such as Oli Udoh and Lucas Patrick), or has the required athletic profile to play it, specifically the 10 yard split.

Andrus Peat 1.81 seconds - Ras Score - 6.94
Erik McCoy - 1.72 Ras Core 9.47
Cesar Ruiz - 1.77 - RAS Score 8.25
Trevor Penning - 1.65 - RAS Score 9.96
Oli Udoh - 1.76 - RAS Score 8.82
Lucas Patrick - 1.6 - RAS Score 10.0
Taliese Fuaga - 1.77 - RAS Score 8.30
Landon Young - 1.72 - RAS Score 9.52
Nick Saldiveri - 1.7 - RAS Score 9.68

The two guys who fit the least, Peat and Hurst...also coincidentally had the lowest 10 yd splits of the bunch. Peat didn't even breach a 7 and that was back when he was younger. I can only imagine he's slower now than he was prior as he's now over the age of 30.

So, IDK Man... we can keep going I'll keep countering you.

I said the 1st line to let you know that I value your opinion and hardly disagree. In this case it's not an argument it's more of me pointing out that what you and other see in TP is a result of bloody awful OL coaching and handling of a player not only by Marrone but by DA as well. I think Marrone broke TP down into what you saw at the beginning of last yr
I don't disagree that Marrone wasn't a great coach, I also don't think that's the only thing that tanked Penning either.

I think they pulled him too quickly last year.
It appeared to me that he was improving.
I don't know how he's supposed to get better w/o playing time.
I strongly felt that way when he was pulled last yr and scratched my head when he just never saw the field after that even in jumbo packages. Then I started thinking that they may have made their mind up early about keeping Pete and knew a change was coming. I think they also could see that Marrone was just not working. I think DA knew the kind of offensive system he wanted and wanted to let the new OC bring in his own staff. Say what you want about DA but he has done a great job of attracting coaches . I think maybe they wanted to shut down Penning to protect him from injury and to lessen the bad influence Marrone had on him. My .02

Sounds like me. I have obnoxiously long arms for my height (77" wingspan and I'm 5'10") and the leverage is all wrong for me to bench high weight repeatedly, but in 1 on 1s, I worked dudes over who could do 10-20 reps more than I could.
Same, my wingspan is about 8 inches longer than my height which is crazy, I suck at bench press, feel like I gotta move the bar a mile lol

Bench???? That’s more worthless than 40 times. They desperately should replace bench with squat, never, ever in an NFL game is there a time where you have your back to a fixed object where you use your chest lol. Such a dumb exercise to grade players for at football. In high school my teammate had about 40 pounds on me and out benched me by about 175 pounds and I would over power and flatten him on the daily. (He has the highest bench on the entire team and he was straight trash)
And you’re right!

😂🤣😂

Personally, I still look at a player’s bench numbers. But I try to keep em in perspective too. For example:

What’s the player’s height n weight? What position does he play? What is his arm length n hand size? Then I’d factor in his bench numbers, n if/how well he uses his upper body strength when he plays. Not a be all end all take tho!

Just my 2 cents!

But wat da hell do I kno!

😂🤣😂

And you don't seem to grasp that it was ROOKIE mini-camp No one else really vying for the LT position was there. If we had Roaf or Armstead they would NOT have been at rookie mini-camp and TF may have gotten reps @ LT anyway. There were only 2 OT's at minicamp TF and Ezirim. You also just disregard what DA make very clear that " We know he can play RT some we wanted to see if he could play LT".
Of course it's a competition for every T spot on the OL also for LG

No one said they would be. But you knew that. The point is that if the Saints had an established LT, Fuaga would be focused on RT. But you knew that too when you said "duh" a few posts back. But alright man, you're just being purposely obtuse now. Was hoping for a discussion, ah well. I know better next time. There's other people in this thread giving out solid opinions with solid rationale, I'll leave you to this.

Haha, same. Worked out with one of my local friends who's a natural bodybuilder a few inches shorter than me and we compared arm length and my arms were ~4" longer than his measuring from the shoulder.

At this point in time this makes me happy to see the movement. New position coach coming in who is replacing someone I thought was pretty marginal at best. Three positions on the line probably are open. We are still in the rookie minicamp to minicamp stage in the offseason. I’m glad they are getting these guys looks to see where they fit, where they can do the best. Hopefully Penning is also working his tail off as he has the physical ability, he just needs good coaching and a will to get better. He had a lost first year, and I never thought that the previous coach really had any good feelings about him.
But also, who in the next tier of tackles would make a good guard? Who will be the best backup or is there a guy who will shine in the pros. At this point we just don’t know. So it’s nice to see this happening.

Yeah, combining what I've heard O-line coaches on NFL Radio discuss, realization of the upcoming change at OC/scheme and that Penning didn't have a development off-season between year 1 and 2 due to a late season injury leads to the conclusion that he was more likely pulled to protect the team's asset than let him continue in a system that was going to change and potentially get injured setting him back another year. We should see the results of that chess move by DA last season.

Peat was effective once moved to LT last year, there is no denying that.....we currently have a 3rd year player who has yet to be able to remain on the field at any position and a rookie whose ideal position is RT that will be competing for the LT position......and our current starting RT may retire due to persistent injuries.....

And while I still have some hope that Penning will work out, to me, we are razor thin and apparently very risk averse when it comes to the oline.....sorry if that doesn't give me a great feeling of comfort.....Unless you are totally consumed by blind positivity then it should be a major concern.....

Also, the horsey you are on is up there pretty high....

lol ok kiper
Nah, I'm super serious when i talk about stuff like this if its a joke to you then I respectfully ask you go clown somewhere else.

I wake up everyday and go to work knowing i could have done this job and became a scout. I sucked at football I know that now but I definitely know what talent looks like. Wasted talent, it sucks. Have a nice day.

Here a little proof, someone on here challenged me to name them 5 WRs better than Treylon Burks who before he was drafted I called trash and said he would be the worse among the WRs drafted that year. Some people actually wanted him to come here to, I did my best on here with much opposition to kill the enthuism for that.
