You know, I thought Mel Kiper, Jr., addressed this subject better than anyone during the "On the Clock" series for the Saints. He said, and I am paraphrasing, that there is this tendency to overrate getting a player on defense in the first round. You commit yourself to having to have a player on defense, which causes you to overthink the pick. You can take offense if necessary and still look to address the defense later in the draft.

Ultimately, what you want is value for your picks. We only have four as it currently stands. I would much rather us come away with at least three guys who could help us out than forcing picks on a particular side of the ball that might not pan out for us. This draft, while weak, does have some talent in the middle rounds at LB. I also think you can probably get a safety to develop in the middle rounds. So, I am more inclined to doing that if we have to do so than to saying we have to have a certain position on defense addressed in the first round and ending up with a bust.

Plus, unless you are getting a bona fide superstar at LB or S, my general belief is that those are guys who could be found later in the draft. My ideal draft would be to take Malcolm Jenkins. If he is not there, slide down a few spots, pick up a second or third and draft Wells. Then later on, you can look at a guy like Gerald McRath who I like as much as any of the first round backers not named Aaron Curry. Or you might look at the secondary with a guy like William Moore. I was disappointed in Moore's season last year but there is some belief that his poor showing was due to injury and the weight he gained. He has shown better in some of his off-season workouts and I do know the team likes him a lot.

Name the first round talent on D that is likely to be available that would be better than Beanie.

I assume that Orakpo, Maybin, Brown, Jenkins, Raji and Curry would be gone.

That leaves guys like Cushing, Matthews, Davis who all have considerable question marks, and guys like Maualuga, Laurinaitis, Jerry, Tyson Jackson who either don't fit our D or don't fit a need. The rest of the defenders are fringe first round talent.

So...maybe our value on D won't be in the first round?

Its really not the ideal situation, but you have to be FLEXIBLE in the draft, or you've already busted.

You're assuming all those guys will be gone. If that truly was the case I would rather trade drown and maybe get Sean Smith and I would have no problem then drafting a RB later.

a) Of course I'm assuming those guys are gone, they would be BPA at 14. If they aren't, then one of those guys, especially Jenkins or Raji needs to be the guy.

b) We need to have a trade down partner. This is a weak 1st round this year, and there are reports that multiple teams want to trade down. Honestly, we need to get lucky to have a dance partner that wants to trade up far enough for us to justify the Sean Smith selection.

You have to find a partner to trade with. If Sanchez is off the board that will be hard to find

Agreed. The only way I see teams wanting to trade up to 14 would be if Sanchez fell, which from all reports he's locked into going top 10 now and doubt he gets passed Denver at 12, or if one of the Tackle's like Oher is still there and a team doesn't want to risk waiting. I just think both are unlikely to happen but honestly are the only 2 realistic possibilities I could see a team wanting to trade up for.

That would be a perfect draft.
 
if we could draft connor barwin at 14 and chip vaughn in the second round

it would be like we robbed a bank!

barwin can play olb and DE and vaughn can play both free and strong saftey. he could eventually take over for roman harper or darren sharper.




this would be much better than taking jenkins or wells.
