I love this article. Ultimately, it has always been Sean not, Drew. Sean is the straw that stirs the drink........, having a winning record w/ 3 QBs over the last few seasons, proved that to me. We are going to be just fine. I think we could get into the playoffs with some luck, but what's most important is that we come together as a team and are playing our best football the last part of the season.

I know he's had opportunities with Teddy and Taysom, and despite his criticisms of himself during that time - he's passed with flying colors.

But I feel like this will be different. He's no longer implementing a stopgap. It's permanent and I think it will require him to be a lot more flexible than he would normally be.

He will need to be less... stubborn. When you've worked with someone like Drew Brees your entire HC career; someone who's capable of compensating for any flaws or shortcomings in your gameplan, how will he fare without that safety net?

For me, I disregard practically everything Payton has achieved thus far and look at this season as a fresh assessment of his skillset because I don't know what kind of coach he is without Drew Brees.

EXCELLENT post. I feel the same way. This will be a season where SP will have to face many new challenges. He now has to decide between two QBs before the season starts, how will he handle the situation if that QB starts to stink it up, does the other QB feel slighted, the locker room will now have a #1 veteran voice, etc. Many upon many things will be different. I’m sure he will be able to handle everything, but he will have his challenges for sure.

I think SP has done some of his best coaching without Drew. He has embraced the adversity. Some people are like that. They really get locked in and focused when no one is giving them a chance.

Is that sustainable over an entire season? We'll see. But SP apparently understood Teddy and Taysom's limitations and didn't ask them to do too much. I'm sure he'll put Winston/Hill in the best situation to succeed.

I'm not sure about that.

Can't disregard the 2006 season. He had an entire roster to manage and a new scheme to implement and the team went 10-6.

Ultimately, Sean has to think about the challenges of that first season and how he handled it. He didn't yet have chemistry with Brees and I don't think the main focal point was the passing offense yet. On the defensive side, the team was way worse than what it is now. I´m sure Sean will ease the QB he chooses, while putting more pressure on his best offensive players (Kamara and Thomas). The team also has the luxury of having a good defense that can slow down the game. If the QB shows progression, he can start making more sofisticated calls. But using the 2006 blueprint might be the key to this season.

If you really look at it, going back coach Payton's career he has made offenses work with so many types of QB's . He made Kerry Collins make the most of his ability and the Giants had a Superbowl appearance . He had a respectable offense in Dallas in 03 with Quincy Carter , He again had a workable offense in 04 with Vinny Testaverde , in 05 a good offense with Drew Bleadsoe and unearthed Tony Romo . 06 Drew Brees and we know how thats been for a decade and a half . Winning games in between with Teddy Bridgewater , Taysom Hill and good showing with Luke McCown . Even guys like Chase Daniel and Ryan Griffin that he coached up are still atleast backups in the NFL .

Winning? Yes

Winning in the playoffs like he did 11 years ago? Not with the elaborate offensive scheme he runs. It lacks consistency across the course of a game against top defenses. Simplify the scheme and ride your top talent - that's how it's done.

The x factor now is that the Saints can get the deep ball back into the offense. That's what made the offense lethal in the past. Bombs away.

i think if he takes the team to the playoffs with a different full time starter, he should instantly be in the running for the coach of the year..

The defenses inability to stop a flea when it counted as something to do with that too.

its definitely not the same going into july knowing #9 wont be there at camp. this season definitely doesn't have that same excitement for me that i've previously had.

now granted, come training camp, i'll be reading every single TC post in the threads. i will watch every single saints preseason game. and will still say saints are going 16-0 until they lose a game then its 15-1, and so on.

i'm all for being behind winston if he wins the battle. and hill if he wins. i dont have a preference, if hill wins, stop fumbling, if winston wins, stop throwing so many INTs.

other than that. this season i dont think i'll be as "depressed" if the saints lose. because i'm really not expecting a deep playoff run when they're going into july with a qb battle. just too many kinks to work out, especially losing some of the guys the saints lost.

if they're above the .500 mark at seasons end, thats a win for this offseasons issues to me. playoffs? even better. but i'm not gonna say they're going to the SB like i had hopes for since 2009 season ended.
