I wanted to see your viewpoint on this play. It's a very very successful play for those that run it (of course Eagles started it and ran it the most). Here are the teams and how many times it was run and success rate.

Eagles 46 times 91%
Bills 12 times 100%
Bears 7 times 100%
Steelers 6 times 100%
Giants 6 times 83%

Combined, it's an overall 81% conversion.

While I think it's a great play, it's a bit unfair for blockers to block 6 or 7 people versus 2-3 depending one the push.

If it were to be banned, it would happen this offseason. What are your thoughts and should we use this until it's banned? I think this would be a great play to use with Taysom Hill.
The first time I saw the play run was 3 or 4 seasons ago by the Saints with Hill inside the Saints 20 yard line. I'm pretty sure that it was the first time that a team did it, because the commentators for the game said they had never seen a team run a play that was basically a rugby scrum. It was either in Brees's second to last or last season.

No it should be banned in my opinion. That's not fair and too easy to convert.

They'll eventually get around to outlawing it.

I mean, you can push but you can't pull? It's stupid!

Aiding a ball carrier by pushing used to be a penalty for a long time. Not sure why that changed but reverting to that rule would eliminate the tush push.
You are correct, SBB. Assisting the runner by pushing or pulling used to be a penalty. I don't know when they changed it either, but they need to go back to it. That's the reason nobody has seen until recently. It used to be illegal and it was an easy call for the officials to make.

For decades, NFL rules prohibited offensive players from directly aiding a runner in any way, whether it was pushing or pulling him. But in 2005 — six months before the Bush Push — the league clarified its stance. There would be no pulling of ball carriers by teammates, but pushing was too difficult to legislate.

So the push is where the grey area is. I guess we should just start pushing Taysom on every down and see how the league likes it.

I'd worry about unintended consequences with a rule change.

I don't want flags flying for an offensive lineman pushing the pile downfield.
Yeah, I don't care either way about the play itself. Making a rule to stop it really worries me though.

That’s basically the rule for all blocking and the difference from what makes one on one blocks legal v holding.
Push = legal
Pull = holding

I don't know if it should be banned or not. All I know is that while it's legal the Saints would be foolish not to take advantage of that life hack. It's like a cheat code. One ball carrier is given the strength of three grown men running behind a bunch of other giant grown men.

It's almost impossible to stop because even if you flat out stone the play at the snap, the offense can just keep pushing until they get the yardage they need lol. Really difficult to stop that kind of momentum multiple times.

Here’s why I don’t like it. Football is looking less and less like football. When I see the tush push it feels like I’m watching rugby. On the good side, it’s one of the few plays where a team can physically impose their will, or be shut down. Physical football is a lost art.
Rugby is great probably more physical than modern football.
