Ty Montgomery Defies Coaches Orders, Costs Packers The Rams Game (1 Viewer)

He is two yards deep in the end zone. He doesn’t even need to catch the ball because once it touches the end zone, it’s a touchback. Just the act of catching the ball was dumb.

Adam Silver cites both a coach and a player as unnamed sources that Montgomery was instructed to take a knee and that he was upset about being taken out on the previous drive. He took it out because either he made a dumb choice, was upset and not thinking, or selfish.

Yeah when he fields the ball he's pretty close to the line, I can see how it would be easy for him to misjudge where he is on the field and panic.

And there is, indeed, a big difference between a general objective of kneeling the ball if it is clearly in the end zone, versus an explicit direction for that specific play: "Hey - don't return this."

If the returner has discretion to decide if it's worth returning, he didn't disobey anything. I think most of the time, returners do have discretion. Ed McCafferey said on Sirius NFL this morning that he didn't think Montgomery had a direct instruction to keep it in the end zone (and if he had, he should be released).

A couple of things:

1. Why no one is talking about the previous possession with 5 minutes left, when Rodgers All Mighty and the Packers went 3 and out, when they were up in the score, and 3 first downs would've pretty much ended the game?

2. If a player is throwing a tantrum on the sidelines, because you took him out of a play and he didn't get the ball, as a coach, why would you send him out there in that situation?

Stuff like that happens all the time... But because it involves Rodgers, it is now a national crisis.

^^^^

You answered your own question....

Because who the heck is Ty Montgomery?.... And because Aaron Rodgers is Aaron Rodgers, and if given the opportunity(s)... he's done the miracle comeback thing many times.... LOL

That's why. (Duh)

It was selfish... that's all there is to it... if he was a player on my team... he would have been cut the next day. (of course the Packers have to consider the fact that they have like very little RB depth, so there's that)

Yep. exactly. Just went back and looked and he fields the ball with 2:05 left, you kneel it down. Get the ball with 2:05 and you get to run a play then get your free time out via the two minute warning. Running it out was stupid on multiple levels.

Where exactly was Montgomery when he fielded the ball in relation to the goal line?

He gave a (feeble?) excuse that he had to make a split-second decision as to whether or not he was on the goal line/field of play, so he decided to run with it...

ETA: OK, he was about 2 yds deep in the endzone: http://www.espn.com/nfl/game/_/gameId/401030780

McCarthy, "Ty, do not take the ball out of the end zone". Ty, "A who?"

Conspiracy theory:
Ty defied orders and fumbled intentionally. Wasn’t a big hit, wasn’t protecting the ball, made zero attempt to recover the fumble, and did exactly the opposite of what he was told to do. Maybe he wanted out of GB? And he knew this would get him a ticket out?
