Article is three days old but thought Nick brought it at the very bottom of his story on the Saints’ decision with Carr. He prefaced this by saying Carr has a lot riding on this season and reducing his number will allow the Saints to sign more players.

“Here’s the other thing: I don’t think anyone else is going to pay him $30 million. I’m not sure anyone else would pay him $25 million. I don’t know what the exact number is, but there’s a number lower than $40 million and higher than whatever Carr could get on the open market for the two sides to settle at and reach a true win-win compromise. That’s a lot of incentive for Carr to agree to that and stick around. I think both sides can see that.

What I think can’t happen is for Carr to return at his current number, and I think everyone involved knows that, too.” https://neworleans.football/2025/02/27/saints-options-with-keeping-derek-carr

I bolded the critical parts of what Underhill said below:

This is Underhill stating his opinion. This is not Underhill reporting what the Saints or Carr have actually said.

Correct.

Man, I hope not. Just rip up his current deal and pay him $30 million for this season only. I don’t even know if that’s allowed lol.
I hope not as well, but I unfortunately think we have a restructure coming that means Carr is on our books for years to come, even if he isn't on our team. My reasoning:

Carr and his people are shrewd. Wouldn't allow Vegas to receive trade compensation, drug out the FA process between NO and NYJ, and also has stated very strongly in a recent interview that he won't be taking a pay cut.

Combine that with Loomis basically giving away any leverage we might have had by pretty much saying Carr's our guy in 2025. Based on these circumstances, if you're Derek Carr, why would you entertain a pay cut?

Ok…I’ll edit the headline.

My comment was not directed at you. Underhill does more opinion pieces than actual reporting and he tends to blur the lines between the two, whether he intends to or not, based on what I see quoted from his website. Maybe on his website the tags articles as opinion pieces or reports.

Well, to help the Saints field a competitive team this year. If he stinks this season, Carr could be done as a starting QB.

I'm waiting for the cap capliance moves. I don't remember it waiting till March for it to happen.

Two things
1) Carr had no incentive to take a trade from Vegas, he only had 2 years 50 million left on his deal, he was getting more than that as a free agent no matter where he signed. He is in a different scenario right now, he has 2 years 90 million left on his contract, there’s no team that will give him close to that, so it’s in his best interest to take a paycut down to a reasonable level that helps both sides.

2) Loomis made those statements but make no mistake about how smart he is because he left himself an out by saying they have some contract stuff to figure out. They could just as simply cut Derek and say they couldn’t work out the contract situation.

Loomis is shrewd too. My guess is that Loomis and Carr already had agreed to a deal in principle before the announcement and all they have left is working out some of the exact language of the finer details before the new contract is finalized.

In the film industry, binding deal memos are signed to cover the principle agreement on how much compensation, credits and length of service before a more thorough and detailed contract is hashed out. I'm guessing that NFL teams do something similar. It's basically a written and binding record of a verbal agreement.
