Underhill: I think everyone involved knows Carr cannot play this year at his current salary (85 Viewers)

Plenty of time left. Besides, the Saints organization as a whole prefers to wait until they have to on things like this. It’s almost like an organizational passion to only do or turn in things once they’re required to, and where applicable.

I’m guessing end of this week or early next week the news cycle will start churning.
Pretty much has to be the end of this week. By Monday, the "tampering" window opens, and the new league year starts on Wednesday. The Saints had most of their work completed in February last year, only Davis' contract really went down to the wire.

That said, I can understand being behind this year with a new coach hired later in the cycle.

Carr earns a $10 million roster bonus on March 5th. Do you think this will affect the Saints timeline at all?

That $10m bonus is paid on the fifth day of the league year, which will be 3/16. It’s already fully guaranteed, so it shouldn’t impact the timeline.

The bigger date of concern would be 3/14, when his $30m salary becomes fully guaranteed. We need to be cap compliant by 3/12, so while the $30m salary guarantee may affect what we do, we almost certainly will have decided what to do before then.

No guarantees after 2025 please.
I'd just assume bite the bullet now and not drag it out any longer. They need to know Carr and the fan base have a disconnect.

It's a weird situation for sure.

If Moore wants Carr to be his QB, then Carr should be the QB. But it's not a great situation when Loomis constantly has to keep selling Carr to the fans after 2 years.

What if Carr says He'll take a pay cut if we sign Davante Adams?

Then we tell him take a pay cut and we spend it however we want or he gets cut. You don't let a soon to be 34 year-old QB with only 2 years left on his contract dictate personnel decisions. If he wants to take a pay cut to help build a better team around him, great. But he should not get to dictate how the money is spent. Any cut he takes would be better spent on OL, DL, or TE (Holker is the only one likely to be healthy to start the season).

Sounds logical to anyone not named Loomis.

It's not like the team hasn't set precedence in extending bloated contracts. Kicking the balloon payments into the future for players at the end of their career is Loomis & Saints modus operandi. Only issue will be how many years and how much guaranteed money will Mrs B have to cough up?

That's your opinion though.

What if Carr tells this to the Saints brass, and they actually like the player (which based on previous year's tea leaves, they do) and would be willing to make moves to accommodate?

I mean, you yourself would do the tough guy thing with Carr, but the Saints front office itself may not have that same mindset.

Yes. It is my opinion and I think it's the right way to run a team. And maybe the team doesn't agree with me.

But, it's also possible that the team does agree with me and that Carr either takes a pay cut with no string attached or they will cut him. Loomis and Moore left room open for that to happen. Now I suspect they will work things out and come to an agreement that saves the Saints cap space and gives Carr what he wants, but I highly doubt any such deal would be dependent on Davante Adams.

Thanks for the correction

Understood.

I see you’re still holding out hope that the Carr being released fantasy will come to fruition. 😂

I don' think the Saints see Carr as part of the future of this team. They would not invest heavily in an aging WR just to appease him. He is not in a position of power to dictate personnel moves at this stage in his career and position with the organization.
