Underhill on Payton (1 Viewer)

Underhill mildly suggested that Payton may just be burned out from the season and has gone away some place to chill away from public eye. He thinks this last season was extraordinarily stressful. Things wil become clearer during Senior Bowl week. This is all from a Podcast on the subscriber account. I get real good insights from it.

His insight is this: He will be around 60 when his contract is up. He may go the Brees route into broadcasting. He also suggest that Payton and Loomis who is older may go out together. Jeff Ireland and Dennis Allen could be waiting in the wings to fill their jobs and provide continuity.
The Ireland and Allen succession plan makes sense as to why we haven’t lost them yet.

I can understand Paytons feelings.

He always got the entire hate from Goodell and the refs.

What Payton had to go through year after year, getting hosed again and again. (Penalty difference, bounty gate, no call, exiting the committee…)

It’s enough! Ill respect his decision once it’s announced
Speaking of Baddell, if Sean does go to a new team, I am sure Baddell would make sure the problems follow.

Not sure about that
In a small market team probably

But Goodell is all about money. If Payton would join forces with an LA team for example he won’t be bothered by any reg decision ever

I’m not doubting that Payton may feel a little burned out. I’m also allowing for the possibility that he isn’t.

But one thing I do know, the gamesmanship he’s exhibited throughout his career, he’s still got that. And whatever he’s doing, there’s a purpose to it. He’s not confused about anything.

Or he can be seeing what his options are post football. He could make a deal that’ll kick in when his contract ends like Brees.

Payton has spent a long time building up the staff he wants. He could take off the off-season with some input in the draft and let his people coach until July. They have a lot of pieces in place and I’m sure the team would let him do this.

Dude is just on vacation after a ridiculously challenging season. He's not running away from a "rebuild" because Brees retired last season...that's the last thing a person like him would do.

I’ve felt there was retirement smoke. Not I’m leaving for another team smoke.
I’ve felt that 2026 was the target date for his last season. He’s been in the League for sixteen years. Except for Belechick and Reid, you have to go back to the 60s and 70s to see someone that has coached as long as he has and stayed.

He has been in the league a long time, but did have a mandated sabbatical year in 2012. Had retirement talk come from someone other than Underhill, I would be readily dismissing it. At the moment, I am not sure what to believe, though Payton surely knows how nearly impossible it is to win big without a top quarterback.

We're Payton to leave, it would mean the loss of not only the head coach, but the de facto general manager. I would not want Dennis Allen as a successor coach. But this is all complete speculation and hypotheticals.

He's on vacation and I don't think this season is worse than the one he was forced to sit.
