Is it just me, or does Kellen Moore also kind of have the Malcolm in the Middle syndrome like young Coach Payton, like he could be a cousin.

He does have similarities to Payton including the looks, but I don't think he's quite the personality that Sean is. But, do I think it's also important that Kellen Moore interviewed for the job when DA got it. Maybe Loomis has some buyer's remorse passing on Glenn and Moore last time?

Sure. There is no one way to build a great team. And I wouldn't take a Guard at #9 either unless I was damn sure he was a HoF Guard. In fact I think you are probably better off converting college Tackles to Guard in the NFL or taking college Guards in rounds 3-4.

If it's 4th and goal with 3 seconds left in the game and the Saints are down by 4. They win and they're in the Superbowl. Would you rather the ball be in the hands of someone like Jeanty or Joe Scheaux RB? How far did the Saints go with a solid O-line, a HOF QB and nobody receivers? A great O-line can get you far. It can make average players look better than average. But not as far as a game changing player that can take over a game like Reggie Bush in the playoff game against Arizona, or Kamara in his 6 TD game. In the playoffs, the other team has a pretty good D-line too. You need more than Joe Schmaux players at skill positions to get further in the playoffs. And it's a lot easier to get those players in the top of the draft. I'd rather get one now rather than have to try to trade up for one later.

Well of course I brought it up. You were talking about how you need a great RB and the example you used was a guy taken in the 3rd round. The reason we don't have a good backup to Kamara is because they haven't much bothered to draft one except for on pick on Kendre MIller, who has a lot of talent and would be a great backup, except that he can't stay on the field. They really haven't tried drafting one other than him.

And the history of the RB position is there are many great RBs available after the first round. It's much harder to find those at WR, DE, DT, OT, QB, etc. Doesn't mean you don't take a RB is round 1, but he damn sure better be a sure fire HoF talent. And even then, you could probably get guys close to the same production in later rounds. Especially if you have a great OL and run scheme. To me the guys that are worth a high first round pick are guys like Marshall Faulk or Bush who bring dynamic playmaking ability in the passing game or Barry Sanders who had transcendent talent. I don't see that in Jeanty. But, I could be wrong.

Thanks for the insights. I thought the rule was amended in 2021 to require “in person” interviews. The below statement is from the NFL Football Operations:

“In 2021, the NFL approved changes requiring every team to interview at least two external minority candidates in person for open head coach and GM positions and at least two external minority candidates — in person or virtual — for a coordinator job.”

My original point in all of this was, that I don't think being in Philly this year would make Moore more likely to draft Jeanty at #9 since that was a team that already had a great OL, DL, WRs, LBs, etc. and they keep drafting big men in the 1st and got Barkley as a fee agent. But, Jezzy is right that maybe the Boise State connection could make him look more favorably on Jeanty.

Moreover, I'm not saying that you should try to fill RB in free agency, I'm just saying RB is a position that you can get good to great players in free agency and later in the draft. That's much less so for good to great OL and DL. It happens, but it's less common.

But, I do disagree that citing Henry and Barkley doesn't help the argument. That's two HoF RBs in one year that were available in free agency. There have been others in prior years. But, if you think Henry and Barkley are that rare, 4 of the top 10 rushers in the NFL this year were acquired in free agency. The ones that were drafted by their team, other than Jonathan Taylor, are still on rookie contracts. And I think 6 of the top 10 rushers were taken after the 1st round.

But sure, it's dumb to let a great RB, or really any great player, go in free agency. I'm just saying relative to other positions teams often let them go and it's easier to get great players in the draft at RB without taking one in the first round. Which doesn't mean you don't take a RB in round one, but if you are going to take one, especially if you are going to take one in the top 10, you better be damn sure he's a HoF level guy.

I agree about good RB's being a bit more available and I also agree I would almost never take one in the 1st round unless they were an incredible dynamic talent.....I actually feel the same way about the WR position, there are a ton of good/great ones that weren't 1st round picks....

I think the only disagreement we have centers around the good/great label....there are plenty of good RB's that finish in the top 10 a few times or even once in their career, there are very few that do it consistently and are HOF level talents.....I can't think of the last time 2 RB's the quality of Barkley (who I think is the MVP this year) and Henry switched teams.....can you? It's a total anomaly, which is why I don't think it helps your argument.....That's all I'm saying.....

I think you are correct. I believe there has to be an in-person interview for HC.

Both were hot shot coordinators in there first gig, then publicly demoted (lost play calling duties vs fired). Both then rebuilt their playcalling reputation in the NFC East.

Difference is Payton got 3 years of tutelage under Parcells. Moore's HCs since his firing have been less impressive.

And then I know nothing about Moore's leadership and organizational qualities compared to Payton.
