Vehicle plows into crowd on Bourbon St., with 14 fatalities

Anyways. The sheetbag that killed our fellow citizens was influenced somehow. That takes quite a bit of hate. Just trying to make sense of it

Where was this guy radicalized? It was in our backyard! Not more than a 6 hour drive at the most for the most of us. I want to know. The families want to know. Why?

Bro sometimes in life, things just dont make sense .. at all…. Trust that there will be attempts to hold people and entities responsible- namely the City for not doing more to prevent.. ultimately though, the responsibility lies with the attacker, who’s not around to face any consequences .

You just need to realize that it’s impossible to make sense of things that dont make sense .

Terrorists are part of a don't like it cancel culture mindset. If 2024 was your cup make sure a new 25 doesnt happen. Hit and run but that's just when the dogs away. Gimme 3 steps didn't even get 2 the one way no d all rough no tough coward. Kudos to the police big time, yeah it makes sense.

Both this guy and Vegas guy served I the military
Maybe start asking questions there before going for the doomscrolling answer

He was an IT guy in the army.

The story thus far is he only started getting radicalized after his family fell apart and his real estate interests started failing.

Why do we have such a hard time doing this? Is it just human nature to want to try to make sense of things?
Seems like a good time to discuss Performance theory…
Starting with cubism and other pastiche art works, it became clear that the artist did not need to present the whole
Most performance art (dance, experimental theatre) demonstrates that its intention of action that’s important, not narrative cohesion
The audience will do the work to craft a narrative by themselves
tbf these are art forms have tiny audiences

But this seems to also be the same mechanism that makes wag the dog propaganda work
A demagogue just needs to throw seed out there - doesn’t matter how outlandish seemingly - and many in the crowd will grab it, plant it, nurture it and ultimately reap

I think it’s a “if I can rationalize it, I can make it make sense, if I can make it make sense, then I can cope with it” mechanism

Seems ultimately self defeating in these sorts of circumstances though

Unrelated, I was thinking about the derails last night - it’s almost like a real life trauma response, isn’t it? If we were all sitting around the dinner table or something, little tangents of levity would start breaking off as everyone starts to process what happened.

Ultimately these incidents usually have the same answers as ‘why did Katrina hit us’

And similarly that question can be used as a distraction from the actual answerable questions like ‘why did Katrina impact us so much’

Once the bulk of information is out there, news comes in drips and drabs
I think the derails are the idle chatter that happens waiting for more news

Sure and I’m just suggesting start with more practical questions than ‘is it Judas Priest lyrics?!’

The idea that he must have been radicalized by some external force also ignores a very long history of humans developing feelings of detachment and rejection from what they believe is the society around them . . . a state of mind that, in some, can become violent entirely on its own.

I do think that some people become radicalized by organized systems (including online material) that foment these feelings in individuals - and the more the individuals become attached to the organization, the more pliable they are to carry out acts. But that certainly isn't essential - just because someone decides they're going to kill people while brandishing and ISIS flag doesn't necessarily mean they were radicalized by some online material or local agent.
