Video of every Trevor Penning snap versus Cardinals (4 Viewers)

Some good, bad and ugly in there. I do think he got better as the game went on. The thing with him is he is physically capable, and has the talent. He just has to be consistent, which is what we have yet to see from him.

I also think it’s clear he’s better at run blocking then pass protection.
I was thinking the same. He may be one of those cases where he just needs to get a massive amount of reps. The only problem is time is not on his side.

Not enough knee bend or punch on pass sets. Squat down, Bro! Some good run plays, though.

He never seems to use a punch. There are times that he tries, but he's not close enough to hit the guy. There just doesn't appear to be any aggression in this game which is baffling for a guy that came to the league with a rep for being nasty and got into several early fights as a rookie. It's like he's totally lost his confidence and aggression. The result is he is passive on every play and in pass protection guys easily set him up to be driven back with power or they just set him up for a quick inside move. They don't even need to bother trying to bend around him.

Just wild... What are they doing with him off the field. He looks as raw as he was in his rookie season.

Just constantly beating himself with bad technique and no discipline.

He wins reps easy when he actually playing like a football player. The problem is that he doesn't play like one often.

Just a lot things that should of been cleaned up by now. Extremely worrisome.

This is what I see also. He is "absorbing" way too much. It's like he doesn't fully understand when to engage, and the defender makes the decision for him and it catches him off-guard each and every time.

And when it does catch him off guard, his pad level is already too high and he's relaxed, making him an easy guy to get past whether it's with a power move or a speed move.

I'm just not sure if this is a skill that can be learned at the NFL stage of the game. Most of the players coming in, especially as a first round pick, have these basics down pat as well as the natural instincts of how and when to do these things, or so it seems.

There was more good here then I thought there would be, but still a lot of really bad.

He is playing the entire game from his chest up. He is trying to bench press on every rep. It's like he doesn't even know using his legs for balance and power is an option. There's no way coaches haven't pointed this out to him yet, so I tend to agree with the assessment that he just isn't executing the technique he is being taught.

Sometimes people just can't figure it out no matter how much teaching. Reminds me of when my friends tried to teach me to wake board. 2 hours they taught me about the curl and twist, but I just couldn't get it. I think that's where Penning is. Hopefully he has the Ah Ha moment one of these days, but for now, you can't have him starting for your football team.

I think OL positions are similar to the PK position.

You can look good on 7 out of every 10 plays, but the three that you REALLY screwed up on are what ultimately defines you as a player.

If a kicker lines up for seven FGs in a game and makes from 20, 30, 40, and 50, but then misses from 25 and then completely shanks from 30 with the game on the line, he's not going to get kudos at all; he's had a terrible outing. That's kind of how I see OL.

Those plays where he looked good were just him merely doing what a OL is supposed to do. He was doing normal OL things, being unnoticed. He has to clean up the 2 to 3 very bad plays he has out of every 10 in order to be viewed as a success though.

Those 2 to 3 bad plays may not all lead to sacks or TFLs, because your guy isn't always in position to make the play, but if you do that enough, those sacks and TFLs will quickly add up over the course of a game/year.

Consistency is what makes a great offensive lineman, not merely doing your job properly 7 times every 10 snaps. The 20 to 30 percent clip could get your team beat and/or your QB hurt, quickly, and that's what Trevor must clean up.

Penning in run blocking: there is hope.

Penning in pass blocking: hope the QB has his will filled out.

Make him an often-used tackle eligible for the next two years, to get some usage out of him, then move on....assuming he doesn't get things figured out here quickly.
