I don’t know what any ever saw in him. He got beat a lot in the senior bowl. That’s why he was so angry and showed his “toughness” and that’s basically what got him drafted. Toughness.

He never showed high football intelligence. Never showed good skills.

Now here we are 3 years later and he’s the story of pre season. It’s not his fault. He should not have been projected that high and drafted that high. Too much was put into his physical traits instead of his skills and mental capacity.

I posted a long winded version elsewhere, but this OL has me concerned about whether we can make any progress on offense this year. I stick to OL > QB > OC. If the first part of that chain breaks, the other two links don’t matter.

Ruiz on most of the same plays doesnt look terribly much better and Landon Young looks even worse than Penning.

Agreed. And not just how well they pass protect. They will need to improve the run blocking because this entire offense depends on being able to run the ball and if they can find a way to run the ball it puts you in better situations where pass protection is easier. And given the issues at RT, they are going to need those situations badly.

Yep, Penning and the LG spot are getting all of the attention but Ruiz really struggled last year. There's been an assumption that he'll be better in the new system but we really don't know. Some of his issues in one on one pass sets aren't system related.

Yeah, but in the end Chris Penn worked hard and was a serviceable dancer at the prom. We need Penning to become a serviceable dancer at RT while Fuaga cuts footloose at LT.

I'm like everyone else here, just a fan behind a keyboard, but did play some offensive line in college. I thought that video was pretty brutal. Penning lacks athleticism and his footwork is atrocious. Like, a totally amateur pass set. Just sidestepping out there, not anchoring himself at all. He lets the defender come to him without attacking/punching and getting his hands inside. He's obviously a big/powerful guy so super concerning that he is so easily bull rushed. He has very long arms but doesn't use them at all. He doesn't keep the defender locked out and lets the defender get into his body. At this point, with him as a third year player drafted in the first round, I have little hope he figures it out. It really is amazing we are having so much trouble on the oline despite the draft capital we have put into it. We have first and second rounders almost across the board. Guess this goes to our talent evaluators (or lack thereof).

I still can’t for the life of me understand why so many want to give Penning a break with comments about “him being better than that” and changing the conversation to condemn someone else instead. Others may well be playing horribly and deserve condemnation in their own right —— but the fact is that Trevor Penning is horrible. He could have been called for holding on a vast number of those plays and could not even sustain blocks against much smaller men. He needs to see if the wrestling federation would give him a shot at a position filling the bad guy position on their wrestling matchups. We don’t need him in New Orleans.

What i think happened, considering that DA is a defensive guy, at the time of hiring a new Offensive staff, he took KK's word, that word which was given to KK from Benton that he could fix TP. Benton without knowing TP up close, probably leaned on his 35 year history and made that statement. (And im ok with that, id certainly trust Benton) However, Benton maybe in a unique situation that even he has never faced with Penning, a guy that has slam dunk measurables but just doesn't get it yet. Im sure Benton has developed far better olineman working with 1/2 the potential of TP. I think Benton is currently slammed mentally trying to get TP fixed and will remain slammed for the rest of the camp.

Looks like he has no confidence and plays on his heels. He'll make the roster at least one more year because of where he was drafted, but if he starts he'll get abused, and he'll get his quarterback killed. And next year he'll probably be gone.
