Was Dan Marino's TD record this sacred ??? (2 Viewers)

Yesterday Sportscenter spent 10 full minutes on Brees and the record. How Brees got there. Summing up the season with highlights from each game. How incredible it was that the record is 27 years old. How classy Brees was handling the situation.

Not one word about running up the score, or it being "easier" now.

I admit, I didn't watch Sportscenter yesterday. I watched it Monday - and the NFLN on Monday. They all broached the topic. Good for them if they moved on.

But keep thinking the whole media's out to get New Orleans and all its fans. It's just really weird and depressing that most of you can't relax and enjoy this, one of the great weeks in franchise history, without worrying if the networks are giving the proper amount of respect.

Shut up, Saints fans, and just enjoy this.

Yeah, but Brady would've gotten an hour long special if he broke it.

Hey, I never said that no one is saying good things...

But I've been listening to ESPN Radio and NFL Radio all week, and I've been surprised how much this topic keeps coming up. And I don't remember hearing any of it when the TD record went down.

Hey, we can look at the world through rose-colored glasses if that makes us feel better, just as long as we know it's not reality, I guess...

And just because we point out a few inequities doesn't mean we're not enjoying the ride

Wow ten whole minutes, we should be thanking them. Do you realize before last week every single segment of every single show on ESPN at some point changed the subject to Tebow.
And as I'm typing this, they've been talking about Tebow for 20 minutes on First Take.

Maybe that's the crux of the problem. This conversation started almost a week before Brees actually broke the record, but it's only been broken 1.5 actual days.

What an energy drain. I'm done with it all.

There's more to debate about on the subject of Tebow. I haven't watched NFLN or Sportscenter since XLIV, but did when Brees broke the record because I wanted to bask in the praises. Apparently, I should have waited a day or two.

I find it amusing that the Saints "ran up the score" when they scored consistently the entire game. The Falcants, on the other hand, stopped playing after the first quarter. Not like we ramped it up at the end of the game. We played the same the entire game!

Not mine:

In 1961, back when men were still men, the immortal Sonny Jurgensen set the world on fire with an aerial assault unrivaled before or since, putting up 3,723 good, American passing yards.

In 1967, playing in a gimmicky league with a gimmicky offense, Joe Namath set a new record with 4,007* yards.

For a 11 long years, that mark stood. And then something dreadful happened. The league adopted the 5-yard chuck rule and stopped defenders from mauling WRs all the way down the field.

The very next season, in 1979, Dan Fouts broke the record with 4,082** yards, and again with 4,715*** yards. And in 1981, Fouts broke even that record with 4,802**** yards. Clearly the rules were inflating above-average QBs, making the interloper Dan Fouts look like the unparalleled Sonny Jurgensen.

Then in 1984, Dan Marino capitalized on the new pass-friendly rules to break the record again, posting 5,084***** yards.

27 years and numerous rule changes later, Brees broke that record with 5,087****** yards.

So, just to avoid taking away from the incredible play of Sonny Jurgensen, I propose we list the record as follows:
"Sonny Jurgensen - 3,273
Joe Namath - 4,007*
Dan Fouts - 4,082**
Dan Fouts - 4,715***
Dan Fouts - 4,802****
Dan Matino - 5,084*****
Drew Brees - 5,087******
* - Real Football ceased to be played after the AFL-NFL merger; therefore, Sonny Jurgensen is the only legitimate holder of the single-season passing record. Furthermore, all possible legitimate records in football have already been set and cannot be broken by modern-era players; it is advised that all fans cease monitoring statistics immediately."

Somehow Brees has never been a media darling. You'd think for what he does on and off the field he should well be. Back in college, he took Purdue to Rose Bowl for the first time in 30 some years and beat OSU, Michigan and Notre Dame along the way (they were still good then), yet he could not win the Heisman. RG3 didn't even win Big 12 yet he got Heisman.

You're listing team accomplishments and whatnot.

BTW, RG3 WAS the best player in college ball this year. And I agree that the best player in college ball didn't win in 2000 (Weinke won it, but either Tomlinson or Vick deserved it more).

fact of the matter is people hear what they want to hear.

most people think what Brees is doing is incredible. then you have the few hacks cole, prisco, and freeman trying to diminish what Brees is doing because of their bias against Payton/Saints. All the people in the media that are ex-players have nothing but praise for Brees.

I have heard a lot of people saying great things about him breaking the record. I wish they would say one thing more though. Yes it may be "easier" to do it now, which I don't buy in to but hasn't Drew sat for about 3 1/2 - 4 quarters this year? That means he broke Marinos record in the equivalent of 14 games. Now that is impressive.

Someone posted a good article about how Namath had that record in 1967. Then the rules changed in 1978 which said a receiver cannot be bumped after 5 yards and lineman could now use their hands to push off defenders. And the number of games in a season was changed from 14-16. Then lo and behold Fouts broke that record 3 times starting in....1979. Then Marino broke it in 1983. So Marino and Dolphins fans need to learn some history before they start whining.

I can tell you how much Drew breaking the record meant to me. When Malcolm Jenkins scooped up that fumble I wanted him to stop or fall down or go out of bounds instead of get a touchdown so that there were enough yards left for Drew to throw. I never wanted a Saint to not make a touchdown before ever.

I havent heard Marino whine at all.

"It's surprised me it lasted this long," ... "Does it bother me? Deep down, you'd like this to last forever. But 27 years is a pretty long time." ~Dan Marino

That isnt really whining

I meant Marino fans...not Marino.

Not only did he beat Marino's record, Drew is also the only QB in the NFL to have thrown for more than 5000 yards more than once! Two 5000+ yard seasons, but he needs an *?
