There are certainly a lot of similarities, and if you read some of the gnostic texts, it is even more similar. However, there are similarities in lots of religions, and the common theme of detachment from earthly things is hardly unique to Buddhism or Christianity.
There isn't a lot of evidence of Buddhism being practiced in the Middle East, and I'm not sure how much trade and interaction with Buddhists was going on at the time, so I'm not sure what kind of opportunity a Nazerene would have to study Buddhism.
Except Buddhism pre dates the birth of Christ by several hundred years.
How profound. Let me offer a rebuttal.. maybe.
dont let your failure to understand facts get in the way.
you're quite insistent about debating semantics rather than discussing ideas. persistence is only an admirable trait when its in pursuit of a worthy goal.
What facts, the fact that you called it a Democracy when in fact we are a Republic and we pledge alligence to that republic.
Now you are correct in that a republic is very similar to a representative democracy, but that is not what you originally stated and my response was to you stating that it was a democracy.
And as far as discussing ideas, I did on the first page regarding what this thread was originally about.
the word democracy is derived from the greek word dēmokratía which literally means "will of the people". because we are a democracy, federal aid for the poor can be seen as collective fulfillment of our duties as individuals.
