We need to talk about Tipton (4 Viewers)

I’m not making the argument that time and production in preseason games, in isolation, dictate outcomes. I am saying that for all the complaining and criticizing of Perry I read, every time I see him on the field, I see a guy making plays.
Two things here: Did you watch his 9ers game? He was down right awful. Dropped passes, OPI, bad routes, bad blocking, etc.

Which brings up his biggest issue that DA has spoke about - he's inconsistent. He's also playing against teams 3/4th depth guys.

Conversely, I don’t know what Wilson has done to secure a spot ahead of Perry because there isn’t anything for me to base that on other than opinions stated here. It’s why I’m not saying you’re wrong but asking what it’s based on.
Cedrick can block which is something AT can't. That alone is going to give him snaps over AT. Remember we are going to be a run first offense.

I’ve also learned that what reporters say they are seeing isn’t always predictive of what a team ends up doing.
Which is true to some extent but the fact that AT was playing garbage minutes in our last preseason game is an indicator of where he stands with the staff. Not good.

From an outsiders perspective AT is close to being WR5 than WR3.

I’ve watched all of the preseason games. I’m not arguing that he doesn’t still have room for improvement. Have you paid any attention to any of the good things he’s done?

Silly? It's his name, not a nickname. MT is just easier to type. What has AT Perry done to be called by his initials? It's just a name. You don't have to earn anything.
Because the point of communicating is to communicate. When someone says MT for an obscure UDFA…especially when we had a renown player by the same initials…it’s confusing and is ineffective communication. AT Perry is a name. MT is not.

Yes. I'm an AT fan.

But that doesn't change his camp has been very inconsistent. Putting up big numbers against 4th string guys doesn't mean as much as camp reps against 1s/2s.

I was really hoping AT was gonna show up ready to take that WR3 spot but it just doesn't look like that unfortunately.

Maybe your expectations weren’t realistic for a second year guy who was drafted late?

I’m repeating myself but I heard the criticisms last year and then when I saw him play, I was pleasantly surprised. He seemed further ahead than the way others had portrayed him. Not great, but certainly looked like he belonged on the field and on an NFL roster. I wasn’t the least bit surprised he made the team this year when others suggested that might not happen. Who knows, maybe he’s one of those guys who plays better than he practices, and he needs to learn to show up all the time?

He’s young and in the early part of his career. There are attributes I’ve seen that make me optimistic about him. He’s turned in some big plays this preseason, including a 60 yard reception in the first half against the Cardinals, and caught a really nice tight window throw from Haener for a touchdown, against the Titans, that was negated by a penalty committed by another player.

AT was very inconsistent. There was a point where I wondered if he’d even make the team, but he earned it with a couple of big plays in games.

My main issue with him is he seems to be one dimensional. He’s not a real WR3 who can get open in a bunch of different ways. Maybe he develops in to a WR3, but he seems like a role player right now unless we have some injuries.

Very surprised to see both Tipton and Means playing meaningful snaps so early on in the season. Kubiak is definitely setting them up for success in the long run with meaningful game experience. I'm very ecstatic to see Kubiak developing these young guys.

I know the guy only caught one pass Sunday, but my mind is just absolutely blown that this UDFA not only made the team without logging a single preseason snap, but did so much in early TC practices that he also a.) made the first regular season active roster and b.) played snaps and caught a pass.

This just doesn’t happen. It is incredible. The team must really feel strongly that they not only have a contributor on their hands, but a potential future star.

They have the talent. Throw them out there. They may accidentally make a play. :)

I was convinced he wouldn’t make it to week two (getting waived for a veteran, moved to the PS), but it looks like I’ll be wrong. I agree with you, keeping a guy under the circumstances just doesn’t happen.

We have some pretty good DBs that couldn't stop him in practice, and I'm certain they were trying their best. So I guess that's why the coaches are high on him.

AT needs to beat out Bub and Tipton as well, not just Cedrick.

I'm not sure if you're reading between the lines but AT did not impress the FO this offseason. Between drops and struggling with the playbook he's far from being solidified as our WR4.

He was far from a lock to make this roster. And he's far from a lock to see serious playing time.

AT Perry can flat out play and I feel will be a contributor this season....A 2nd year 6th round pick that actually made the team and in limited snaps made a pretty big impact over the last part of the season last year....

I just crack up when folks call him a "bust" or other such nonsense.....

I hope Tipton and Wilson play well for us also....I'm probably one of the few who really like our WR group....

Yeah some people simply don't have realistic expectations on our players. AT Perry is a guy that came through several times towards the end of last season when he got his opportunities then in the preseason made several nice plays. I have little doubt he will be a solid contributor for us this year (assuming he's healthy). He also provides our WR room with a much different look than guys like Olave and Shaheed, which will undoubtedly help us in some games this season.
