We promised Mingo? [RUMOR] (1 Viewer)

Promises happen in the NBA, not the NFL. It is done in the NBA because players have the ability to go back to school if they do not like where they are projected to be selected. As far as Bower, LSU did not even know for sure he was going to LSU until NSD.

I've heard and read several NFL players say a team promised them they would draft them.

If anything, we will try to get more picks. This may have happened, though I am in doubt. Why would they want to go into another draft with picks every other round? Smart money says if we trade, it will be down so we can get a good player in round2.

First, there is no reason in poking fun at the original poster. Even if it is made up, it does not have any adverse affects. It is different than lying about, say, a signing or a trade that has supposedly been made only to find out that it has not been don.

Second, while we lack picks, this current Saints regime has never been shy about trading up, sacrificing future picks in several instances (Arrington, Morstead, Tennant, Ingram) to get the player we wanted.

Third, Sean Payton is pretty straightforward about what the team needs or a player he likes. Some people take it as a smokescreen and then he does pretty much what he said he would do. He said he liked Ingram and Jeff Duncan tried to tell us otherwise for months only for them to trade back up for him. He liked Jenkins so much so that Gregg Williams told Jenkins to run slow so that he could fall to us. It was no doubt he liked Dorsey and tried to trade up for him before settling on Ellis. He liked Beanie Wells and mentioned that we would take him; we did not but reportedly attempted to trade up for him.

Does all this mean that we will trade up for Mingo? No. But it does not mean that we won't consider it regardless of where we stand on picks. Is it possible we are targeting someone else? Sure, of course it is but that does not mean that the rumor of the Saints wanting Mingo is totally false.

Now go draft Tavon!

I dont doubt they said they "want to trade up and get him", but willing to trade up is a different story. I'm sure the'd like to trade up to the #1 pick.

History does not back up your opinion. I would prefer to trade down as well, however we have a track record of trading up. Traded up for Sed Ellis and Mark Ingram. I can't recall Loomis and Payton ever trading down in round one.

Payton's not nearly as crafty as some of you guys seem to think. Everyone in the world knew we were high on Jenkins, Ingram, and Cam Jordan. The only real surprise pick we've had has been Robinson. We even told Jordan he'd be the pick if he was there.

Mingo makes a ton of sense. His ceiling is sky high which would make a coach like Ryan drool. And with Butler in the fold we now can develop a guy like Mingo properly like we usually do with our rookies. We also have a huge long term need there.

Which is why I don't think we will do that again. Payton saw how all that went, and look right over and see NE stockpile 2nd round picks that runs circles around our 1s...who we end up letting walk or they never pan out. Besides, Payton said he is looking at things differently this year. With all of the projected linemen available, no need to move about pick 15. Most of the skilled players will see late first and 2nd round picks this year, even QBs. This is not the draft to move positions, unless you can swindle a one for one first round trade, this year for next year's.

Again, this is not the draft to do that. We will see available DL, OL and LBs on the board for us our first pick. Just leave that pick alone or drop a few spots and pick twice within the first 60 picks or so.

Those years you mentioned we drafted much higher than 15 (not sure about Jenkins and im too lazy to look it up haha) so when drafted that high, especially in the top 5, of course we are predictable based on need. When picking at 15 its really about best player available at a position of need. Our staff isnt dumb, we dont make promises to potential draft picks, we dont have much ammunition to trade up, we dont know who will be there at 15, we have more than a couple holes to fill so the best player available approach is most likely given Loomis and Payton's track record.

All of which makes the OP's story he heard from the source's source's source that much more unlikely. (no offense to the original poster)

Jenkins was the #14 pick. And while you can suggest what you might do with the #2 pick, it really gets murky once you get beyond that since other teams would then have the opportunity to move ahead of you to get a guy you both may covet. Also...never mind.

This is a fan's philosophy, not ours. Go back and check our draft history under Loomis and Payton. We have traded down twice, three times that I can remember off hand. We traded with the Lions, took Usama Young in the third and gained a pick the following year. We traded down with the Eagles who took Max Jean-Gilles and we got future Hall-of-Famer, Jahri Evans. We also traded down in that draft, and got Roman Harper when people were crying for Winston Justice. In both cases, we were able to add Jeff Faine and Hollis Thomas. Other than that, we have traded up and THERE IS A REASON WHY WE HAVE THE LOWEST AMOUNT OF DRAFT CHOICES OVER THE YEARS. In the past four drafts, the most we had was 6 in 2011. We had as low as 4 in 2009.

Listen, I am not saying that the team will move up and get Mingo. But I also would not be shocked if they did trade up for him OR SOMEONE ELSE since this team is not as hung up on draft choices as we are. Most of our roster is set, to be honest. Having 11 draft choices like Atlanta or 17 like San Fran would not benefit us as much, short of using them to trade up or stock top picks for the following year, because we do not have 11 spots that will be open. For all the challenges we have in transitioning to a 3-4, we have a solid core of players that are definitely going to be on the team. You could reasonably predict up to "at least" 45 players on next season's roster without having the benefit of preseason.

Please show me the quote where Payton said, "We are blowing it over here while NE is stockpiling picks (most of which they blow but no one ever pays close attention to that). We are changing our draft strategy."

In all due respect, this is a fan's view of things. But it does not square well with history. And history is all we have as none of us will know what the Saints will do on draft day until they do it. My only thing is we should not just dismiss the OP even if we might not support the move. The Saints could very well have said what the OP has claimed and STILL NOT TRADE UP because executing a trade is a lot harder than just talking about wanting to trade.

All true, and reinforces the possibility that we will not do that again. That's not fanatacism either, its the way we will have to move forward. Every draft pick we lose, that cannot fill a need, put us in a position where we have to search in FA, to find the fill, which is much more expensive. We will see if Payton actually saw the error in his ways as he stated.

Well I know that neighbourhood
The talk is cheap but when the story is good
And the tales grow taller on down the line
