Wow. I had a 325 dollar gas bill and a 125 dollar power bill 5 years ago when I moved into my house. Now after insulating the floor to R-19, attic to R-36, new argon windows, doors, little foam thingees behind the outlet covers, and a tune up of the furnace, my electric bill was 92 dollars and my gas bill was 78. I love having a 1500 square foot house with 8 foot ceilings. We got down to 15 degrees three nights, under twenty for a couple more and it was the coldest month on record here in the valley. I leave my house at 70 because I have about two tons worth of stone tile in here, and if I ler it get down to 65 my heat runs forever trying to warm the place back up.

Now listen to me cry when summer gets here and I have to turn on the A/C when its 117 degrees and the rates here are tiered from 13cents per kilowatt to 36cents per kilowatt. I'll be crying I am sure.

$150 electric plus $25 water this past month. $5.65/day.

2500 sq footer in Lafourche!

Wow over a grand for heating?? Whew. Something has to be wrong. I would check with the neighbors and ask what their bills were. Call the gas and electric company as well.

Here is what I have done for my Gas furnace. I also have gas logs in one room (rarely use them and a gas stove).

7 day programmable thermostat (the $40 version is fine) set at 62 from 10 pm - 6:00 am. 67 from 6:00 am - 8:00 am and then back to 62 until 6:00 pm - 10pm it goes back to 67. (Some people swear that a steady state is the way to go but I disagree). The wife has found the overide button and frequently overides it however as she is forever cold.

Dec was $125
Highest bill was in January at $150.00
Feb will be down below the $150.

7-8 months out of the year it is $10.00

For Electricy I am on the steady pay plan of $92/month.

This is for 2800 Sqft home.

I have electric hot water heater (I have also heard the tankless suck) that I have on a mechanical timer set to the same schedule as the furnance. You can get this timer/switch at Home Depot for $40 bucks. I think it helps alot. No reason to heat water during the day or middle of the night.

New windows will be on the list for this year as my current windows are 1978 pieces of crap.

I use the power company's averaging plan. I pay about 113 a month every month. The house is empty m-f during work hours.Townhouse, all electric, use a programmable thermostat. I like the averaging system, that way I know every month what the bill is going to be.

Also thinking about the tankless water heaters but am not sold on them yet. I read mixed reviews.

Eeyore, we had one installed two years ago and would never go back to a tank. we also had all the water lines in the house replaced too so that may be the difference because you need to have one gallon per minute flow for the thing to work right. it did drop are gas bill by about a third

We keep the thermostats at 63 degrees in the Winter. We dress like freaking Eskimos in my house. I'm going to check my outside electrical outlets and make sure none of my neighbors have an extension cord plugged in.

Dude call the power company and have them check the meter. It can be off-mine was by 15%. It costs nothing. Im surprised with that the meth police haven't been knocking at the door. Around here they keep tabs on who is spending an amount out of line for gas/electricity and then pay attention to those places as it is a sign of cooking meth.

Built in 1998...We have 50 windows...Anderson double-hung, double-pane plus 5 skylights.

Back in December when no one was in the house for 2 weeks and the therms (I have 5 of them in my house) were all set down to 55 degrees, I still got a $300 bill.

Maybe the utility company will assign a Customer Relationship Manager to my account. I might look into solar and more efficient Hot Water Heater (least efficient Rheem made). Plus I know my furnace is inefficient (low AFUE rating probably < 80%); but it's ~$22K to replace my upstairs and downstairs units.

Maybe baseboard heat....dunno...willling to try different stuff.

Something doesn't sound right. 63* and $1,100 a month don't compute.

We keep ours set on 68*. We use 900 gallons of heating oil all year. This year we're paying about $2.50/gal., so for the whole year, we'll pay only about double what your bill was.

Of course, we don't have a McMansion like yours either. Just a 1700 sg. ft. ranch.

$125 last month-- less than 5 a day. Electric heat and gas for water in a 2800 sq ft house.

Brand new construction high efficiency hot water heater and heater. 60 when we are out, 68-70 during awaking hours and 65 at night. I am a light Nazi. Never sue hot water for clothes washing and dish washer is high efficiency.

I suggest the windows and resealing doors. Also check under your sinks for big holes aroudn your pipes that may allow cold air to creep in from your basement.

I live in N. Louisiana - 3,400 sq.-heated feet. Last month's electric bill was $192 and my gas was $122. I thought I had it rough before checking out some of ya'lls other prices. I guess things are tough all over.
