What Song Most Encapsulates the 1980s? (1 Viewer)

For some reason I thought of this thread, and realized this one wasn't posted. Main theme for one the major "brat pack" movies, with quintessential "synth pop" sound that which defined the era in large part, and released smack middle in the decade.

He has that Michael Bolton tone that’s just like an ice pick to my ears💇🏽‍♂️(or scissors to my ears)

I looked up when Michael Bolton first started recording. Apparently it was in the mid 70s. and he used to sing hard-rock/heavy metal(!). Him John Parr are roughly the same age (born 52/53). Not sure who started recording first, but Parr had the big hit before Bolton. I don't know if one of them copied the vocal style from the other. I'm too lazy to research.

... and the best music video ever!

I don't think any music video has come even close to having the impact the Thriller video had. When it first aired back in 1983, it blew everyone's mind, not only because it was Michael Jackson at his best, but because of the production value of the video. It featured the voice of the Master of Horror himself, and was directed by a bona fide Hollywood director who has to his credit Animal House, An American Werewolf in London, Blues Brothers Trading Places, Coming to America, among others.

For the record, those names (respectively) were Vincent Price and John Landis.

This is the Bolton song I remember. Definitely heavier than his other schlock. There may have been other harder heavier stuff but like you I just don't care to do the work of research :hihi:

So who else just went back through the entire thread just because it got bumped?

Adding this because I'm not sure it's been in the thread and it's one of my kids' favourites off my eighties mix:

Thought of another aspect
The 80s/Mtv was a global phenomenon
Until then American music (and English music that sounded American) was exported
But MTV allowed for a lot of importing as well

As well as British acts who actually sounded British - The Cladh to Madness to The Pogues to Dexys Midnight Runners
Also reggae sounds creeping in with Musical Youth and Eddy Grant (I’d put Marley in the ‘too big’ category)

Definitely on the short list, I remember the girl I was seeing and smelling her perfume while she danced to this song.....brings back great memories.....

would you recognize that perfume if were to happen to smell it again?

This thread is awesome just like being a kid in the 80’s was awesome. Kind of makes me tear up a bit - so many great memories. Thank you all.

I had an ex - worst relationship ever - who always wore White Linen. That smell triggered me for a good 10 years after we had split (and I imagine people just stopped using it more than I lost the olfactory connection/response)
