2017 Draft was gangbusters. Since then

Our 1st Round Draft Picks have been :
Marcus Davenport x two #1’s
Cesar Ruiz
Payton Turner

Our 3-6th round picks have been depth contributors and ST players like they at least should be. But our 1st Round picks have been misses. Flat out. You can’t miss that bad that often and sustain Championship Football. Our 1st Round guys can’t get on he field (Davenport and Turner ) or have been reserve level performers ( Ruiz)

2018
- Traded (2) 1st Round Picks for Davenport. Small school freak athlete has been injury prone
No 2nd Rd Pick
3rd TreQuan ( depth WR )
4th Rick Leonard ?? Cut
5th traded
6th Kamrin Moore
7th Will Clapp

2019-
No 1st
2nd - McCoy
4th - CJGJ fell bc of character concerns A+
6th/7th Kaden Ellis / Saquon Hampton / Alize Mack

2020
1st Cesar Ruiz
3rd Zach Baun
5th Trautman
6th traded up for Tommie Stevens and cut him

2021
1st Payton Turner
2nd Pete Werner
3rd Adebo
4th Ian Book
6th Landon Young
7th Kawan Baker

Davenport is active right now and he’s our best Defensive Lineman when he’s on the field. Force on his own and creates huge pressure for others. He has 6.5 sacks in his last 6 games. He is the pass rush.

Only the 2020 1st rounder and draft was bad. There weren’t better immediate impact picks than Turner at 27 this year based on the next 10-15 selections’ impact this season. They were all mostly DE, DT, DB, and OL and have all had average rookie years.

Only way we could’ve had a better ‘21 1st round impact is by trading up for Toney, Bateman or Mac Jones. But we wouldn’t have gotten Werner and Adebo if we traded the picks used on them to trade up in 1st. Werner and especially Adebo have played like 1st round picks way above their draft spots. We have a starting LB that can start at all LB positions and a CB2 for years to come thanks to finding those gems in the 2nd & 3rd.

First of all, you're not going to hit on EVERY draft pick...that's just a proven fact. Second, it's too early to judge the 2021 Draft Class. I will say the Saints can do a better job with their later round picks. The only 1st round pick I questioned then and still now is Cesar Ruiz. If he doesn't start playing better more consistently then that B word that rhymes with dust will begin being said.

Says who? The Saints already did it in the 2017 draft. The Saints went from a legit 3 year rebuild to competing the same year. Lattimore, Ram, AK41, Marcus Williams, Trey Hendrickson, (Anzelone sp?), even 7th round pick Al-Quadin Muhammad (5 sacks this season) for Colts. It can be done.

Yes of course...but look at the three or four drafts before that

Jury is still out on Turner, he's shown flashes when he's played. Ruiz thus far doesn't look like a good pick at all. Davenport is a beast but is oft injured. Adebo looks to be a great pick. Werner looks legit. Baun? Meh I expected better thus far. Trautman has been disappointing in the pass catching game for sure. Ellis has been solid. Gardner-Johnson = great pick.

You sure about that Clark? Maybe you meant we used 2 1st picks on Davenport because we certainly didn't trade 2 first round picks for Davenport.
Most people here are crazy about this. There heads explode after the trade and pick. They say since we swapped first round picks with the Packers and traded one it equals 2 first round picks. This has been a debate since it happened. My view of giving up 2 or picks is what the Rams, 49ers, Seahawks and other teams like that have done. Trading for a player giving up 2 or 3 first round picks and having no first round picks. In the NBA they announce a trade and say they swapped pick 20 for pick 12.

I’m good if Baun turns into a shanle 2.0. Solid good player.

Just curious. What's the trade price in draft picks for a 25 y/o game wrecking DE whose presence on the field makes everyone else better. This same player averages .83 sacks/game, 2 QB pressures, 1.4 QB Hits and almost 4 tackles per game?

I'll give you a hint. His per game averages are equal to or better than a 27 y/o who was traded for 2 1sts, a 3rd and a 6th.

2020 stands out as a bad draft. Trautman is the only player of worth and he's had problems with drops this year. The other years are about what we should be expecting. 2021 looks like it could turn out to be a good draft, we'll have to wait and see.
2017 was great but we had 2 1st's and was picking in the top third of every round. We're not gonna have a draft like that every year, y'all really need to temper your expectations.

But it's never done every year. That's probably the best draft in NFC South history and one of the best drafts in NFL history and you're behaving like it's a routine draft for any team.

The problem with this year's team is not the scouting department, not the QB position, it's not coaching (threads blaming Payton are little a little more annoying than threads like this). The problem with this year's teams has been injuries and COVID.
