Opinion Why Drew Brees never won MVP (1 Viewer)

Drew's problem was he signed with a low market franchise that the commissioner and the media just did not care about

DB = Goat and it is not even close
Tennessee, Atlanta, and Carolina have had MVPs and they are in the all time basement.

Drew had the unfortunate situation of being in that Rodgers, Brady, and Manning era.
2009 had Manning because the Colts were the last undefeated team and Brees and the Saints lost the head to head against Rodgers and the Packers in 11.

A victim of media bias. Journalists fall in love with the media darling, because journalists have to be told who is good and who the MVP should be. They can’t think for themselves. The media falls in love with the story. Multiple MVPs for Favre? Come on. Why? The Saints were carried by Brees his entire career. The definition of an MVP. The journalists (voters) changed the definition of what MVP means to fit their narrative. Brees should not have been overlooked. He was breaking records every year and he still holds many.

They have a low opinion of them usually most of the time but every once in a while, if some once-in-a-generational athlete, freakish duel-purpose QB like a Michael Vick, or seemingly unstoppable, human tank for a RB that dominates and destroys opposing defenses like Earl Campbell or Derrick Henry, there's a halfway-decent chance they'll pay far more attention to them and be more open to giving them League MVP award then if Brees' had some of the very best, outstanding, bar-none, statistical passing seasons in NFL History.

Add in to the mix variables like a hostile, scheming, lying commissioner who used us as the ultimate "sin-eaters" as a distraction for a larger, former players and NFL veterans lawsuits for CTE-RELATED concussion dementia issues NFL owners, GM's and League officials knew about for decades probably but covered it up or willfully ignored it, plus "useful idiots" snarky butt crevasses, and talking heads like Cris Collinsworth, Joe Buck, and journalists who play favorites and no matter how forking great of a season Brees' could have, SOMEHOW, it was still not as good or dominant as what Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, or Aaron Rodgers did.

If Brees had played for Dallas for the exact time period, he wouldve won 2-3 MVP's, won or played in more SB's, and be seen and recognized by more people as the GOAT and people like Skip Bayless are forking liars if they say or even try to claim otherwise.

But you’re acting like the Saints were completely ignored.
They weren’t. During Brees’ time, the Saints were one of the most marketed franchises. They always maxed out on prime time games.

Brees finished second in the MVP voting four times--2006, 2009, 2011, and 2018.

I don't think the voting was affected by Brees playing for a "small market" team. In those years, the Saints were still a "feel-good" story because of Katrina and were a team people wanted to watch on television because of how explosive our offense was.

In 2011 and 2018, there were other quarterbacks who had incredible years--Rodgers in 2011 and Mahomes in 2018.

In 2009, Indianapolis, which had lost talent on offense, won its first 14 games (though we won our first 13), and the Peyton Manning brand prevailed.

But Brees's problem was that he always had to battle the perception that as an athlete and quarterback he was not quite on the same level as Manning and Rodgers. The reasons were that he was not a first-round pick, his height, his lacking the absurd arm talent of Rodgers and Mahomes, and in New Orleans Payton receiving the credit for the team's offense whereas in Indianapolis Manning was considered the de facto coordinator and received the credit.

Brees finishing “second” is a facade when you compare by how many votes he lost by as it was never close for any of those years.

My personal opinion is that Brees never had a chance because most voters never saw Brees as the prototypical QB. He would’ve needed a year where no one performed as close as he did and unfortunately 2009 and 2011 had Rodgers and Manning have great years and the media loved them.

Why Drew Brees never won MVP is interesting. Food for thought:

* Archie Manning won Conference player of the year while playing for the 7-9 Saints in 1978.

* Chuck Noll (Steelers coach in the ‘70’s) never won Coach of the Year.

* Brees should have won MVP in both ‘09 and’11.

JMO

:gosaints:
Noll finally won coach of the year in 89,but yeah he should have won at least one in the 70's.

If the Saints had won that GB game in ‘11, Brees would have gotten MVP.

I think the reason he didn't win it is rather silly......DB never "looked the part", he wasn't a 6'4" strong arm QB with a cannon for an arm......

To me, there is no other explanation.....

It is 100% a slap in the face to the game of football. Much less Drew Brees , the Saints and all our fans that Matt Ryan and Scam Newton win MVPs . Its almost like it was out of spite that they were given those awards . Neither are worthy of the Hall of fame and neither won anything of significance. Newton was a joke and Ryan is a choke artist. The fact that they both won MVPs and Drew never did is a disservice to football fans everywhere. They never wanted Drew to win it . They would look for any reason to NOT give it to Drew . 2009 and 2018 should have been locks . 2018 hurts because if we beat Dallas on Monday night late in that season I think Drew wins it hands down . The media was all about it until we lost that game , most of them still had Drew as the guy .
