Not just our airlines with all the problems
=======================================================

With airline bumping a hot topic these days, CBC News has heard from many Canadians wanting to share their own sagas.

Vicki Russell's story stood out.

She missed a*$10,000 dream cruise of the*Galapagos*Islands*because she was bumped from an overbooked Air Canada flight.

"I was so upset, I thought I was going to cry," Russell said from her home in Toronto. "Air Canada caused me to miss the trip of a lifetime."

The retired lawyer had always wanted to witness the unique wildlife in the Galapagos. She decided that this year she'd finally make her lifelong dream come true...............

On April 1, Russell checked in shortly after 8 a.m. for her 10:55 a.m. Air Canada flight.

Her plans started unravelling about two hours later when she spoke with an Air Canada agent at the boarding gate.

Russell says the agent informed her that the Miami flight was overbooked and that she wasn't getting on board because*she didn't have a valid*ticket.

Russell was dumbfounded because Air Canada had already issued her a boarding pass and checked her luggage for a $25 fee.

"It was extremely upsetting," she said. "The woman could not have been more rude, hostile.

In all my years of travelling, I have never had a travel person treat me so badly."
Russell says she stressed to the*agent that time was of the essence*because she had a connecting flight that evening in Miami and then a cruise to catch..............

People really should learn to read the fine print. Things like this is why you always fly out early. Anytime we fly for work we always fly out a day before we need to, just in case circumstances like this pop up.

They did her wrong, real wrong. I'd be ******.

Glad to see she'll be able to take her vacation after all.

Not saying it is right to get bumped but geez, flights get delayed and cancelled all the time. Mechanical problems, computer systems and weather issues are always caussing cancelled flights.

With a cruise of a lifetime, one should give themselves a little margin.

Typically people travelling international or doing something time sensitive like a cruise are made a priority. This sounds like poor planning on the part of the gate agent. I know we have intentionally delayed flights to accommodate late arriving connecting passengers for such an issue.

If you are going on a trip 1,000 miles away and it takes exactly 14 hours to get there without any traffic etc. Would you leave 14 hours before, or give yourself some leadway?

The same should be done for flying. As stated above delays happen all the time at the airport. If you can spring 10k to go on a cruise, but you can't spring 100 bucks for a hotel for a night, then don't blame the airline when you miss your 10k$ cruise.

This is why it should really be an auction to get someone to give the seat up. Eventually someone out of 300 will want to lock in an amount before the other 299 grab a great deal to delay by a day and it's not just forced on someone without knowing their circumstances or story. Self-selection and higher cost to match having the privilege of 99.9% of the time lowering costs by overbooking without having to resort to an auction.

Yeah! Totally her own fault! I mean, we shouldn't be holding businesses to higher standards!

Nothing wrong with holding businesses to higher standards. Nothing wrong with being upset with their over booking practices.

My problem is the drama queen whining about how she missed her "dream cruise" and blaming the business. The over booking just happened to be the one thing out of several more common delaymen'ts she could have faced.

Sometimes we also need to hold people to higher standards and stop blaming others. When you do not factor for unexpected delays, chances are something will delay you. Over booking some times happens. So does flat tires, lost keys, traffic jams, weather delays, flight delays and the list goes on.

Had she planned for the common unexpected delays, she would probably had free hotel stay for the night and a nice travel voucher and enjoyed her dream cruise. Easier to just blame our misery on other parties I guess.

It's one thing if the delay is because of something outside the airlines control.

In this case she is delayed because of something caused entirely by the airline's actions.

The airline is 100% responsible. Her frustration with the airline is justified.

This. I don't even fly all that often, but I have personally experienced this. Once when my original flight was delayed just a bit, I almost ran to the connecting flight gate. The gate agent was holding the door, and everyone else was boarded. I walked onto the plane and they shut the door behind me. This was just a plain old domestic flight.

That's right!! It's completely foolish to expect an airline to hold up it's end of the bargain. Travelers should always foot the bill for an extra night in a motel because the airline will screw up. Why expect them to do what they're supposed to do? :jpshakehead:
