Yacht Rock a Dockumentary (3 Viewers)

Music is one of the few things I take seriously anymore…..to me this YR BS is just another dumb label thrown around to make money….Steely Dan is about as far from being a rock band as Bach is….its ridiculous on its face IMO
Kind of like the Rock &Roll HOF. It's been so diluted by groups and individuals who, though good or great in their own right, don't really fit even a broad definition of "rock & roll".

If J Geils Band and Grand Funk Railroad aren't in, then it is not RRHOF. IMHO, of course :hihi:

Agreed.....They should just call it the Music HOF.....

It’s ’grunge’ for boomers

It’s ’grunge’ for boomers

Hahaha....not for this boomer!!!!

It reminds me of the Southern rock label they put on the ABB, when ABB is clearly a fusion band.....lazy, know it all, RS "experts" that know little to nothing about music....

Okay, humor me - explain which of these songs isn't "rock" :

There are elements of rock in many of their songs, but the jazz influence is much greater IMO.....most musicians would not classify Steely Dan as a "rock band".....and Yacht Rock is just....dumb....IMO

I'm sorry but this is just mind-blowing to me (the Steely Dan is not rock part, the yacht rock part is what it is, I can't say that's unreasonable).

Artful, jazzy rock is still rock. Is Yes not a rock band? Is Phish not a rock band? I can accept that some of Steely Dan's catalog is so fusion-influenced pop that it really isn't rock, but they've made equally as much genuine rock. Fagen and Becker draw their influences from old-school R&B as much as they do from Coltrane and Miles Davis.

With all friendly respect, the notion that "most musicians would not classify Steely Dan as a rock band" is nonsense.

With all friendly respect, you don't know many musicians do you?

It's easy and lazy to just call everything rock......just like the Rock and Roll HOF (it's not a rock and roll HOF, it's a Music HOF, and that's just fine)....

In the end, it's just a label, you can call it whatever you want, and labels are very much subjective....

You left off Bodhisattva

Peg and Deacon Blues are probably my two favorite by Steely Dan, and while they’re most definitely not hard rock, i would not *not* classify them as Rock… i guess what i mean to say is that i *would* classify them as Rock .. chill, mellow Rock.. as one might partake in while aboard a 40 or 50 foot floating vessel of some kind, off of Marina del Rey or Siesta Key .

I can ask the few that I do know - though I'm quite sure of the answer.

And I'm not simply calling everything rock. While I agree that what is and isn't rock can be heavily subjective, I think there are basic keystones of rock - including the strength of the rhythm section, the tempo and time, and the instrumentation and subject matter . . . and certainly much of Steely Dan fits those criteria. If you can listen to those songs I posted, including Reelin' in the Years, Black Friday, etc. (and there are others) and provide a defense of the notion that it's not rock, then cheers mate - but you can't.

So notwithstanding this supposed but unidentified universe of musicians a majority of which allegedly don't consider Steely Dan rock, is there any other basis for saying these songs in particular aren't rock?
