Moments after the New Orleans Saints drafted him, Marcus Davenport received a call from head coach Sean Payton which he couldn’t fully interpret.

As expected, the excitement from family and friends was so loud; Davenport couldn’t understand the first few seconds of Payton’s message.

“Everybody was screaming,” said Davenport. “So, I had to tell everybody to be quiet, so I couldn't hear him. But it was more like, ‘Do you want to be a Saint?’ I was just happy. I was really happy.”

After taking part in the team’s rookie minicamp earlier this month, the University of Texas at San Antonio product is happy to get back to football, following months of preparing for the NFL Draft, where the Saints gave draft picks to select him 14th overall.

The New Orleans Saints have selected Virginia safety Jonas Sanker with the 93rd overall pick in the third round of the 2025 NFL Draft.

The 6-foot, 206 lbs. Charlottesville native was a two-time First-Team All-ACC selection and key piece of Virginia’s defense over the past two seasons. He led the Cavaliers in tackles in both 2023 and 2024, posting 107 and 98 stops respectively. Sankerat also recorded 8.5 tackles for loss and two fumble recoveries in 2024. At the NFL Combine, he displayed strong athleticism with a 4.48-second 40-yard dash and a 36.5-inch vertical jump.

NEW ORLEANS — The New Orleans Saints strengthened their defense in the third round of the 2025 NFL Draft, selecting Texas defensive tackle Vernon Broughton at No. 71 and Virginia safety Jonas Sanker at No. 93.

Broughton, a 6-foot-5 senior from Houston, developed into a key player on Texas' defensive line. He was selected as the 3rd round draft pick. After starting 15 games in 2024, he recorded 39 tackles and 4 sacks, contributing significantly to the team’s defense alongside future NFL talent.

Saints draft Texas DT Vernon Broughton No. 71 in the 2025 NFL Draft

The New Orleans Saints have selected Texas Longhorns defensive tackle Vernon Broughton with the 71st overall pick in the third round.

Broughton, 6-foot-5 and 311 pounds, will help the Saints fill out their defensive line as they make the switch to a 3-4 defense. The big defensive tackle was a force in 2024, accumulating 4 sacks and 4.5 TFLs.

Broughton is quick off the snap and fights through blocks with his impressive length to make tackles. New Orleans has had a run defense problem and adding the former Texas defensive tackle is a big boost to their run defense.

The New Orleans Saints are adding a bunch of players during this weekend’s 2025 NFL Draft and they’ll have an extra pick as part of the proceedings. At the 2024 NFL Trade Deadline, the Saints moved cornerback Marshon Lattimore to the Washington Commanders and received a Day 2 pick in return.

That trade is going to finalize this weekend, so it’s a good time to wrap a bow on it.
