What is Payton up to? (1 Viewer)

I’ve been racking my brain trying to figure out why Payton has been pushing the Taysom train so much. There are only two explanations:

1. Payton really believes Taysom is our future
2. Payton wants someone to pony up a pick when we tender him.

I also wondered why Brees hasn’t announced a decision. I felt like it would be a no-brainer that he’d come back. Everyone saw how anxious he was on the sideline while he was out. He didn’t look like a guy who’s ready to retire.

Then, after Payton talked about Taysom being the future, Brees even went on some national shows and said he’d be glad to split reps with Taysom as a passing-of-the-torch year if he comes back.

Which means, again, one of two things:

1. Everything being said is true: Taysom is the future and Brees will be the “bridge” while Taysom transitions into more QB reps.

or....what I think is actually going on:

2. Brees is coming back. And not as a bridge or anything else. He (and Payton) realize they need to push the Taysom narrative to get someone to give up a pick.

Whether it’s drafting the QB of the future, someone to help right now, or both, we need more high picks. By delaying his decision, Drew is letting the Taysom hype train build. And Payton is fanning the flames.

We all love Taysom. And I do believe that Payton will transition to a mobile QB tailored offense soon enough. But I can’t see Drew walking away yet. And the only reason I can think of to delay what seems to be an obvious decision is to build more league wide interest in Taysom.
So what you're saying is that TH is not the next Steve Young, but the next Steve Walsh.

Interesting.

They could do that. Of course Taysom has to sign it. He thinks he's a starting QB and he'd be signing a multi-year contract for below market value in that case. I think if you're Taysom you want to be on one year deals if you aren't getting starting QB market value. So when your value is shown you're free to sign. Basically what Teddy has done. If Teddy signed that 2 year 11 mil deal with the Dolphins last year he'd be stuck until next year.

That deal would essentially be a 1yr deal with auto voidable yrs, team eats the dead cap if the deal is not extended. Depending on how much Drew commands plus the savings from a potential Teddy departure, Saints may be able to sign Taysom to a similar deal but with less guarantees in yr1...

Payton and Taysom's agent will not be able to drive his perceived value as a QB up enough for someone to give us a 1st round pick for him... but it cost nothing to try.
That's all... nothing to see here. Never was anything to see.

Wanna bet?

Never has a 3rd String QB gotten so much hype. I understand Taysom wants to be a starting QB, However I think he has a better future at pass catching.

Can't really see any team paying unproven QB like him a big contract and giving up a first Rd pick. This draft seems to be full of talent.
It's really kind of silly. People talk as if this is monopoly money and a fantasy team. NFL teams pay real money. Do they whiff? All the time. But ain't nobody going down that rabbit's hole with Hill. We know this. People just get carried away behind keyboards with enthusiasm, support, and oftentimes blind Homerism.

It could be both that he believes in Hill, and that he will be just as pleased if someone ponies up the draft compensation to sign him. Everything Payton does is methodical.

Tendering him as a 1, no team is going to touch that - any team that needs a QB will draft inside the top 15 (With the exception of maybe Pittsburgh/Chicago at 18/19). No one is going to toss a top 15 pick for a 30 year old QB who has thrown 13 passes. If there was a bad team who in a prior year picked up a 2nd 1st rounder later in the round, maybe. Not the case this year. But as it is, every team from 15-32 are set at QB (again, Pit/Ch at18/19 may be the exception). 1st round tender, Hill will be a Saint in 2020. No mystery, no strategy. Its very simple. Tendering at a 1, Payton no BS believes Hill is QB of the future material.

Tendering him as a 2, all bets are off. This is what I think the Saints should do.

No one is going to throw massive amounts of money at Hill. Lets say Pittsburgh offers Hill 4 years 48-60 million. IF Payton believes Hill is the future QB, he just nabbed him for 12-15 million a year by matching the offer sheet. A full on steal. Hill doesn't pan out after a year, you are basically paying him nearly what you paid Bridgewater. If he plays lights out, Hill and the team would likely work on another contract to avoid Hill holding out. All of this is a win win for the Saints.

It would be in Hills best interest to just sign a 1 year deal with the Saints and play for the big contract next season.

Only if you're willing to trade him for the 64th pick in the draft.

My question is this: who is pushing the Taysom Hill stories, CSP or the media? Honest question, maybe I missed something, but it seems like the media.

Yup. Payton is just answering the questions asked. He’s also bragged on other players in the past who he stuck with that didn’t pan out. I will say that Payton has been extremely complimentary of Hill, but even then, it’s obvious for anyone who watches games that he’s just stating the truth. Hill is a gamer.

Payton is being asked, but he is also choosing to respond in a way that doesn't simmer the flame. Otherwise, he would just go vague Payton and give a "we like the player" "we have a plan for the player" or "he has a leg" type response.

Payton and Taysom both made the rounds super bowl week. They could've layed low like Teddy.

Sure. All my SR cred for yours. Winner take all.

I don't pretend to have any cred unlike some that apparently work for the Psychic Hotline and think they are the second coming of Miss Cleo.

But I will make my predictions and you can make yours and we will let the chips or creds fall where they may.

  • Teddy does not get a $20M/Yr or more contract
  • Taysom is 1st round tendered or extends his contract
  • Taysom receives an offer sheet north of $7M assuming he is tendered
  • Saints match the offer (they were not chasing a pick afterall)
  • Taysom plays his usual role and a much larger percentage of QB snaps
  • Tayson will not disappoint his fans
  • Taysom's completion %, yards/Attempt and QB Passer Rating will all be higher than Teddy's
That's my guess

I don't get your point, is laying low or making the rounds better?

The question was who is pushing it? Payton or the media. If Payton and Taysom weren't in Orlando doing interviews superbowl week I don't think it would be a story. That's how they got the "he's a franchise quarterback", "we may get a 1st round pick for him" quotes from Payton and the "I want to be a starting quarterback" quote from Taysom. All of those quotes are what that media ran with. Without the interviews you don't have the quotes.

  • Teddy will get right around $20M/Yr. $18M to $25M, but since you took the under, I'll take the over.
  • Taysom is 1st round tendered.
  • No team issues Taysom an offer sheet.
  • No offer for the Saints to match, so we'll never know what they would've done.
  • Taysom plays his usual role but gets a few more QB snap.
  • 1/2 the fans will exaggerate Taysom's successes, 1/2 the fans will exaggerate Taysom's shortcomings.
  • Taysom will not have enough QB stats in 2020 to adequately compare his #'s to Teddy's #'s.
This is for the 2020 season.
