So much piss and vinegar over a 4th round QB. There have been years when 4th rounders haven’t even made the team, why so much venom over this guy? A guy who won more games for Notre Dame than any other QB, including a Joe Montana. I’m not saying he’s great, but he’s certainly not so terrible that we should be freaking out over drafting him in the 4th during the transition from a hall of fame QB to whatever comes next.

Because he's a QB any other position people would be excited about or see value in but because he's a QB he's getting the QB scrutiny.

I don't know if Sean Payton really sees something special in Ian Book or if they just gambled and hope that he has what it takes to be the next starter for the Saints. But to speak of a "wasted pick" at the end of the 4th round is a bit presumptuous. I for myself see it this way: In the draft you should nail the first two rounds. And even there, some picks - Anthony, Jean-Baptiste, etc. - are totally wrong or wasted. With good evaluation and of course some luck, you can still find someone who is ready to start in the 3rd round, but from the 4th on you can only hope that your evaluation is point on. In all honesty, a pick in the 5th, 6th or 7th round is perhaps marginally better ranked than a UDFA.
There were already "meltdowns" here when we traded up to get Kamara. In retrospect you could lick all your fingers if you had taken him in the 1st round. It would be justified.
All I want to say is that it is far too early to really evaluate this draft class. Just hypothetically: Suppose Ian Book turns into the savior for years to come in Payton's system. Nobody would have thought Brady, Dak or Winston would have such a career when they were drafted. Does he develop like the coaches hope: Homerun! If he doesn't, than a pick is gone at the end of the 4th round. So what...
We can still can complain enough in the future if no one of our new players really shines.
Couple that with the fact Winston will be starting this year and if by seasons end they don't see the progression in Book there is another draft to find another guy, he was not drafted to start this year but to develop, Payton always says there is a vision for the player, the Saints don't draft blind folded there is a system in place (especially on offense) where aquiring guys with specific skillsets is the name of the game

Book has an obvious ability that could transition well as the Saints future signal caller but he's still behind J.Winston and there is no guarantee we don't go QB next year, this is just the beginning of the post Brees era and we haven't even gotten to camp yet and people are complaining

I agree with everything except Winston starting. I have been following Book and posting about him, under mostly scrutiny, for a while...LOL. He checks MANY boxes that CSP looks for and most of his cons are coachable. I did a detailed post on him in the "pick no one sees coming" thread. Outside of the top 5 QB's in the draft, no one fits what Payton would covet as much as Book. Actually, I would say out of the top 3 QB's since too much unknown and "scheme fit" for the Saints. I am glad we brought him in. I like this pick.

I like the highlight reel on Youtube. And I really want that giant tight end 87 he was throwing to.

Pretty good.

SSF is vocal when a player is a bad pick. That's not a new occurrence. I'm trying to think of the last time the consensus was down on particular draft picks and those player went on to prove everyone wrong. Frankly...it's pretty uncommon. But honestly, most players don't pan out, so predicting everyone to bust will usually result in you being more accurate than not.

I think Ian Book is not a bad pickup. I am not seeing the issue with arm strength. I think he has a good enough arm to make regular NFL throws. I have seen him throw 50+ yard passes with him barely stepping into the throw. The passes don't have a lot of velocity but I think its good enough. The 2019 games show him throwing more deep balls. I think 2020 the Notre Dame Offense had more jump ball receivers. Skowronek and Mckinely could not stretch the field like Claypool.

The issue with his deep ball is accuracy. I think he puts too much arc on his deep passes and they end up falling short. The decision making isn't bad either. 72 Touchdowns to 20 Ints is great for a QB. If he can learn to read defenses better and throw with anticipation he can be a good pickup.

So you believe Taysom Hill will beat out Winston for the starting nod?

I am pulling for Book if for nothing else to prove all of you guys who wrote him off before he even got in the building. If he makes it, the crow you guys will need to eat is going to be awesome to watch
One of the reasons I’m pulling for Payton Turner

This is an interesting write up on Ian at the Senior Bowl.

Could be another reason why Payton thought highly of him. He played well. What if the dude has potential to get even better? We always discount that. The guys who surprise and become far better in the pros than they were in college...

I'm really rooting for him. I can't wait for camps to start.

I am not expert, but i decided to watch "highlights" of Book that someone posted. (Not really highlights, it as every play Book either was attempting to pass or he ran the ball). I am absolutely amazed he did anything. His OL is horrible. It is not even accurate to say he had good protection was the exception, it was was like an anomaly. He looked like Archie scrambling around back there. He runs like Steve Young... not elusive back can deep his shoulder enough to get leverage to cut pass tacklers. He doesn't make a lot of dumb throws and takes care of the football. I did notice that he tends to lean back when he throws deep. He also tends to throw high whenever he takes a hard step forward. He also seems to be emotionally mature and will most likely come in with a good mental attitude.

The games I watch was Clemson, NC, BC, Fla. St. Pitt, and Syracuse. (2020). The Youtube Channel: zzLIAMzz11
