More than half the NFL teams would love to be in that purgatory.

Throw a 5 year 50 million dollar deal at Ben Johnson and tell him he can do whatever he wants roster wise. Retool the current roster or tear it down and rebuild.

Who put the Lions roster together? Not Ben Johnson.

And yet, he's got them on top of their division at 10-5 and has never had a losing season. Any Steelers fan who's saying that is out of their mind.

My point is that fans need to think beyond "Offensive head coach" and "Defensive head coach." Because most of the young guys getting hired in recent years aren't true head coaches. They're still glorified coordinators who contract out the other side of the ball, and they don't know how to manage a game or how to manage a roster. They just call plays and then stare into oblivion when the possession changes.

The HC's who win consistently may or may not call plays, but first and foremost, they know how to align a roster, lead a team, and manage a game. And they are a dying breed. Vrabel fits the bill. Ask Tennessee fans if they'd like to have him back.

We'll see how serious Gayle is about winning. Loomis can step down naturally or he should be forced to step down by Gayle Benson. He gets credit for hiring Sean and bringing in Drew and keeping it afloat for 15 seasons but his last seasons end press conference with the gum smacking, the ridiculous comments he's continued to make on WWL, its time for homie to go.

To defend a career loser to the hilt like that tells me all I needed to know. He's a guy who is clearly WAY too comfortable.

I'm open for a real search, Vrabel is respectable I acknowledge that much but his record is not exceptional. Does he have ring ceiling?

Does Dan Campbell?

I’m not attacking Campbell at all, and I am a fan of what he has done in Detroit (in spite of the folks who hated his hiring and called it racist that he got the job over others), but Campbell hasn’t won a Super Bowl yet. The way that folks talk about him you would think that he is the best coach in the NFL (when he might not even be the best coach in his division).

Vrabel and Campbell are similar in that they are managers, letting their coordinators run their respective sides of the ball, and they don’t interfere. It’s very much how Nick Saban did it. By removing themselves from X’s and O’s and focusing more on the Jimmys and Joes, they are able to remove themselves from the deep details and overlook the entire team more effectively.

Will Campbell be as successful when he loses his OC next year? We know that Vrabel was successful when he lost his OCs multiple times throughout his tenure in Tennessee. Think about that for a moment. The man had success with multiple OCs throughout his time with the Titans.

The man was let go after the success he had in TENNESSEE. Tennessee. That organization is a mess, and is on par with the Saints and Raiders. His departure from Tennessee was hardly celebrated, and more political.

I’m not saying that the Saints should or shouldn’t hire Vrable, but I am saying that he is far more than just some retread head coach.

My wife is from Pittsburgh and she laments how some Steeler fans just want Tomlin gone...

I told her if Steeler management is dumb enough to get rid of him he would be hired in within minutes by teams like ours...

Over half the teams in the NFL are already stuck in purgatory!! Lol

There’s only a few really terrible teams and only a few great teams in the league. Most of these teams are middle of the pack aka purgatory.

Unless someone like Johnson or Vrabel are legitimately interested, the Saints need to consider rolling the dice with a coach from the college ranks like Lanning in Oregon or Marcus Freeman with Notre Dame. I know they both just signed extensions, but it's worth investigating.

First, however, they need to hire a new Front Office and GM. Explore the heads of scouting or executive leadership with Green Bay, Baltimore, KC and LA Rams for candidates.

Beyond Johnson and Vrabel, I'm not impressed with any of the other options at the NFL level. All are either one year wonders (Coen) or have questionable history/have failed in other locations (Monken, Kingsbury, Flores, etc).

I know Brady is popular on here, but it has been suggested that he is not HC material based on prior interviews.
