Chase Young re-signed to a 3-year, $51 million deal (18 Viewers)

I really don’t think he’s reached his ceiling yet with us, I think this could work out well maybe boost his confidence that a team believes in him for an extended time and with the new system who knows, maybe it will rejuvenate him.
I definitely agree that he hasn't reached his ceiling.

The problem is, he's never reached his ceiling on any team, and I don't see a lot of evidence or reason that this will motivate him to actually do that.

May need to update title. His cap hit per Nick is a little over $7 million. OTC has not added his contract, so the $2.72 million cap hit showing is just the remainder of the previous prorated signing bonus.

I am not a Young fan, but one thing a lot of people are not factoring in is the rate of inflation going in with NFL contracts right now. Tier 3 and tier 4 QBs are getting more APY than Brees, Manning, and Brady ever got. If you combined Drew Brees' APY with the Saints and Peyton Manning's APY with the Broncos, they make less than Derek Carr's APY with the Saints. Justin Fields at $20m APY with the Jets is a higher APY than Brees had with the Saints.

Myles Garrett just got $40m APY. Crosby's at $35.5m APY and Bosa's at $34m APY.

Every half decent young DE in the league is going to be getting $17m APY as the floor.

This is what happens when the salary cap is $297m.

Very good post to me, Granderson signed a 4 Yr 52 mil in 2023 and their production was similar last year stat wise add with inflation and if pressures hold weight Chase Young Contract doesn't even seem that far off from that number. Only diff i see is one is underperforming based on draft status and other one is over achieving. I feel they play and now pay is similiar.

Deals should be looked at through the % of cap instead of the total dollars. I guessed $16m/yr for Young’s contract a few months ago, figuring % of cap for his AAV would be close to Granderson (probably still close since the cap went up slightly higher than original projections).

The cap in 2023 was $224.8m. In 2025 it is $279.2m, an increase of $54.4m. Granderson's APY was 5.7% of the cap in 2023, Young's is 6% of the cap in 2025.

ya i get he’s young like people are saying but i just dont see a huge improvement. i think hes a 7-9 sack guy as he has limited moves. i hope im wrong though

The thing is that given the money that Edges get now, his salary is right in the range for a 7-9 sack guy. I looked at how much Edges are making as of last year and his new deal would have put him in the 20s for AAV for Edges. Might be high 20's by now.

But even if he doesn't reach his ceiling and only does what he did last year, the contract is about right. And he's the only player we have that can win one on one in a pass rushing rep. The rest are just guys that can occasionally get a sack if the QB holds the ball to long or pressure is schemed.

He's basically a 7-9 sack guy which is pretty much so worth what he is being paid. The double digit sack guys are getting double what he got and more for the elite guys. If he improves over last year, we got a deal, and if he ever does reach his potential, we are robbing him with this contract.

ya i get it the money isn’t awful. im
getting more upset that we haven’t gotten better at all. how good really is that DT we got from the Pats? just a fat body to plug the run. we need to improve if we want carr to make the playoffs

I don't disagree, but free agency hasn't even officially started yet so there is still plenty of time to improve. But, the truth is that if this team is going to get better, most of it is going to have to come from better coaching and good draft picks. We don't have the money to build a new roster in one off season.

I think signing Young is more about not getting worse on the DL and not being forced to draft an Edge high in the draft. We have now set the floor at Edge reasonably high. But maybe the right Edge falls to them in the draft and they can improve the position.

Does Chase playing OLB in a 3-4 give him a better chance at getting to the QB?

My favorite play of his from last year was when he ran onto the field late and ran straight into the play.
